How Long Does a Signed in Session Last?

Hi.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know how long a signed in session lasts?

While I was logged in I did something outside of this site and when I came back I found that I wasn’t “in” anymore (never happened before), as per this screenshot:

Thanks

Hi,
The session will last as long as you are active. When you pause for a period between 15 and 30 minutes the session will end - as a security measure. My numbers are old so it may be less these days with the way the threat count is rising.

Keep us posted

Hi Dick,

Thanks for your explanation.

I don’t remember exactly how long I’d been away but sure for more than 15 minutes, enough therefore to cause the session to be ended.

As this is the first time that it happened, probably my previous absences have been “shorter”…

Thanks again,

Laura

Laura,
Glad I could help.

Stay well and surf safe

FWIW

I rarely get logged out of the forum sessions, even surviving my laptop hibernating overnight.

I think the key is when you log into the forum you need to check the 'Remember Me' box by your log in .

Unless you want to be logged out... :smileywink:

Yes, that's it! I tried it:

I signed in, didn't check the "Save login name and password" box, then left the site, came back after more  than half an hour, refreshed the page and I wasn't logged in anymore.

I signed in again, did check that box, left and came back after an even longer time than before, refreshed the page and I was still logged in.

Thank you very much!

Laura

Glad to hear it worked.

Now you just have to see if that setting (a cookie I believe), survives your next system scan.

Hi Peterweb,

Thanks, but I don't have coookies set to "allowed", and would rather avoid allowing them unless I've no choice - I don't mind checking the "Save login name and password" box every time I sign in, not a hard work  :smileywink:

I agree with Laura. I'd rather sign in again than have my session saved. It's more secure as far as I'm concerned, given I store no passwords....:smileyhappy:
