No, I don't know how to exclude files from the scanning that occurs when programs read them. I know about the scan exclusions, but thought that applied only to what was scanned in a scheduled or custom scan.
If I disable auto-protect, is email scanning still active and would programs downloaded from the new be scanned when downloaded?
Follow the steps given below to exclude a file from scan.
Open Norton product>Click on Norton Internet Security/Norton Antivirus tab> Click on settings>Under settings, click on Norton Internet Security/Norton Antivirus options at the bottom>In the Norton Internet Security/Norton Antivirus options window on the left pane.click on exclusions,Click on new, browse for the file you wish to exclude.
You can also reduce the time by disabling the scan in Compressed files and active program files (In the Norton Internet Security/Norton Antivirusoptionswindow,on the left pane click on Manual scanning and then uncheck those options.

I would advise you not to un-check the Compressed Files Scanning for Manual Scanning as you should be scanning every file on your computer when you run a Full System Scan to make sure you are fully Virus-free. I would also advise only to Exclude from Scanning with Auto-Protect.
I am running NIS 2008. Certain programs seem to spend a lot of time reading the VIRSCAN7.DAT file every time they read a file. The most problematic for me at the moment is Lightroom when reading *.NEF files.
Is there any way I can configure NIS so that NEF files are not scanned?
In general, I am interested in automatically scanning emails and downloaded files; I don't need additional scanning once the file has passed those scans and entered my system. Can I configure NIS to work that way?
You can just ezxclude it from scanning. Do you know how to do that?
