How to get a product key

Hi

I somehow lost my Norton CD and case which had the Product Key For NIS 2008 but then upgraded to NIS2009 online which have the order # but when i goto Nortons Account Nis2009 is not listed like i never purchased it, I had to pretty much reinstall windows Vista on my moms computer and had to reinstall NIS2009 but now it says only have 15 days... so how do i obtain my product key. i have NIS 2009 installed on my own computer but does not list the product key which is stupid it should list it,

Thanks!

Hi Eraserone,

For best results, contact the Symantec Customer Services through this LINK immediately(chat), they can help you in getting the product key back. Norton Account is a place to save the product key after installing the product through the process of activation. It won't have any of your purchase information. If you have purchased from Symantec Store and have your order number/password, use the Symantec Order Status page to see the status of your order.

Hi Eraserone,

Two ideas for you:

1) Generally upon installation an folder named Symantec is created in My Documents which contains the product key.

2) You can look in the registry:

Go to Start > Run and then type regedit Hit OK

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE > Symantec > CCPD-LC > KStore > click on the last folder under Kstore and on the right side of the screen you should be able to view Key (and possibly LastKnownGoodKey) and your key should be listed there.

Here's a method that I picked up in the Forums but I don't know if it applies to pre-2009 versions and assumes you still have the earlier version on your machine:

Do a search on your hard drive starting in the root for the file key.txt and open it (right mouse click / Open will do that using Notepad) -- it contains the key.

You can try this shortcut since this is the path to my file:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Norton\00000082\000000fb\key.txt

That last bit \00000082\000000fb\ could be different on your computer so you could speed up the search by navigating to that Application Data folder or to the Norton one below it but bear in mind that under Documents and Settings there will be a folder for each user you have on your machine plus Administrator and All Users.

Note that what I show is for my machine using XP Pro and Norton Internet Security 2009.

If you find that file see if you can save a copy to My Documents or to the Desktop and then when you are installing Norton and get to Activation you can open the file and copy/paste the KEY into the space for the KEY -- that avoids errors and breaks it up into groups automatically!

I bet Norton knew we were going to lose our key sometime and not be able to get into Norton Account for some reason and gave us a backup <g>

Thanks for your reply,  But Phil's suggestion to do this  1) Generally upon installation an folder named Symantec is created in My Documents which contains the product key.

Worked for me, But appreciate your reply :-)

Certainly simpler ....

Thanks huwyngr,

Didn't know about that one!

You're right - it's there.

And I’d forgotten about yours …

Phil_D,

I'm using Vista and only the first method can be used here.  No key in the registry; or at least, not where you said to look.  Also, the 'key.txt' file is not found; just the My Documents file.  This maybe part of the new product security but also maybe left over from NIS2008.  I did not use that version.  Just FYI....

That is because Vista does not use the same path as XP, no "Documents and Settings" folder (different from "My Documents" folder).
I am trying to remember but instead of "Documents and Settings" look for the "All Users" folder.  I think inside of "AppData"
 Quads

Phil_D

Just trying to point out that in Vista the path to the text file is (default location that is) C:\Users\<user name>\Documents\Symantec\ .  This is the same as going to My Documents (in Vista).  However the file is not named key.txt.  The registry entery does not exist in Vista for a 'virgin' install (never had any other previous NIS versions installed).

This was / is just to help you out as I see that you run XP Pro as your main OS.  Appeciate all your help on the forum and was just trying to arm you with info on Vista, that's all.  Have a great day.:smileyhappy:

Hi dbrisendine,

Thanks for the extra information; I can always use enlightenment.

You've noticed that I do prefer XP, but I'm going to search my Vista Home Premium machine to see if I can locate it in the registry.
