I am attempting to use Norton Management to re-install Norton Family on a computer. I used Norton Management to remove Norton Family. The computer was in use for several months without Norton Family. Now want to re-install Norton Family. When I used Norton Management it (apparently) allowed me to do this. However, now I am stuck. The task bar contains the new Norton Family icon with a small red X and the popup message says "Setup is not complete. Click to complete setup." I click on the icon and get a signon screen with the error message "A computer with this name already exists in your account. Please choose a different name." Duh. This is the computer I just selected in Norton Management to use, of course it already exists. I tried uninstalling (using Norton Management), restarted, and tried re-installing (again). Same result. What do I need to do?!

Additional details!
The operating systems is Windows 7 Starter edition (SP1 and all current security updates). The version of Norton Online Family is the most current edition (becuz I just installed it).
The computer name, according to Windows | Control Panel | System is "Comp1-Mi".
Temporarily anyway, I clicked through the Norton Family setup prompt by supplying a new computer name (I used Cmp1-Ni this time). It appeared that Norton Family then completed its "setup". I was able to view the policies for the accounts on computer Comp1-Mi / Cmp1-Ni and it looks like it will provide protection; however only time will tell and I will need to test. I am not confident.
BUT: Now I go to another computer and logon to Norton Management. It only lists computer "Comp1-Mi". And when I select Norton Family it pops up a warning message "Upgrade Norton Family! The following devices are running an older version of Norton Family. Please upgrade to the latest version to keep Norton Family running properly. Comp1-Mi
So... what to do?
Hammer,
Thanks, sounds like others have a similar issue. I hope Norton will give a full accounting for what to do. I will start hacking the registry only as a last resort.
Geo
Hello again Geo,
If it were me (and this is just me) I would, in the case of Norton Online Family, install the latest version as supposedly there are a number of fixes. Just remember, you want to purge all things of old thoroughly so that the new installation goes off without a hitch.
Outside of the registry, there are still a number of procedures to uninstalling an older version of NOF that I outlined in that post to choliscott.
Hi geopherkins,
Please log onto your Norton Family account and go to Settings -> Profile. Remove the computer (which is indicated in your bold message) by clicking "Remove Computer" and Save it. Then go back to install Norton Family again on the PCs.
Thanks,
Katie
Katie,
Thanks for your help. I am glad I am a networking professional and persistent. Maybe because I'm technical it just made it all the more confusing for me, but it just isn't obvious. I really can't imagine a non-technical person working through these steps. I would never have found out how to do this without your help. So seriously, thank you. Maybe you can pass the rest of this message along to the developers.
The management user interface is overly complicated. It should be falling-off-a-log simple-stupid. Sigh.
Took me some time to figure out what you meant by log on to my Norton Family. There is no option from the task bar icon to do that. However, under Programs > Norton Family > shortcut (URL https://onlinefamily.norton.com) does that. Took me a few minutes to figure it out. Duh. Not obvious.
I don't see anywhere to go to Settings > Profile to remove a device. When I logon I see the Settings link, that takes me to settings up update all of the accounts, not computers. Again, Duh. Not obvious.
Instead I had to go to Settings > Children > select a child with an account on that device > Profile > Remove Computer (in faint yellow font next to a "?" and then click SAVE (to save the profile). Hmmm. Duh.
So I believe this is what you meant me to do. I just don't understand why Norton Management (https://manage.norton.com/ManagementHome) uninstall of Norton Family doesn't do the same thing. The developers over at Norton Management really need to talk to the developers over at Norton Family. What good is a "management" site if it doesn't actually manage all of the products in the suite?
Hammer, look at Katie's response. You and I both are either too smart for this application, or the Norton developers too dumb. They need to make it behave like other Windows programs. When I uninstall it should uninstall. If I need to remove data on a Norton "cloud" database after the uninstall, that should be contained within the uninstall, not be some non-obvious step hidden within a Norton Family settings menu and unavailable from the global "Norton Management" site.
Ah, to have integration.
