How to Replace NAV 2003 with NIS 2010

Hi,

I'd be very grateful for some guidance from those in the know.  I've read some of the previous forum postings on similar topics and they don't seem to quite match my scenario.  Please allow me to describe my situation...

I've been using NAV 2003 since it came pre-installed on my Dell Windows XP Home PC in 2003.  The subscription is about to expire and I see that it's no longer possible to renew it.  :smileysad:

I'd like to replace NAV 2003 with another product which will run okay on this fairly old platform (Pentium 4, 2.65 GHz with 512 MB of RAM, running XP SP3).  I'm considering NIS 2010 as it seems to get good reviews, and I'm proposing to buy it on CD to simplify the installation.  Any comments on these choices and whether it's likely to run at a reasonable speed?

I've read on the Web about people having great difficulties uninstalling NAV products and getting another AV product to install in its place.  I'm therefore imagining this to be a major piece of work.  I'm intending to make a full backup of my system drive beforehand (in case it gets trashed in the process) after running CHKDSK, Spybot S&D and a NAV 2003 full scans (all of which showed up as clean within the last couple of weeks).  I'm hoping that reduces the chances of problems.  Any other suggestions?

I've downloaded the RNAV2003 tool in case the Add/Remove Programs uninstallation fails.  I'd prefer not to use it, though, as I also have Norton Ghost 2003 on the PC (which I recall received updates via LiveUpdate in its early days).  I'd prefer not to have that removed so that I have to re-install it and somehow find the updates again.  I'm reasonably computer-savvy so, if need be, I'm capable of diving into the Windows registry (after backing it up!) and hacking away to remove NAV as long as I have some instructions to follow.

I assume that, if I'm successful in removing NAV 2003, I can then remove LiveUpdate as well, as Ghost 2003 is now out of support and won't be receiving any further updates via that route.  Presumably NIS 2010 has its own update mechanism which might conflict with the old LiveUpdate if it's left in place.

If I succeed in getting rid of NAV 2003 and LiveUpdate, then are there any issues that I should watch for when installing NIS 2010?  Incidentally, I have a hardware firewall in my Internet router, so I'm not too concerned about the intervening period when the PC is running without any protection.  If need be, I can unplug from the Internet during this time if I'm installing NIS 2010 from CD.

Many thanks for any guidance.  I'm not looking forward to this!  :smileyindifferent:
