How to revert to previous version of NIS (v20.x to v19.x)

Could someone at Symantec please explain the process of downloading v19.x of NIS, removing v20.x and re-installing 19.x.

Thanks very much.

Hi,

I'm not Symantec but here's the process. I'm assuming that you have a valid subscription.

Use the Norton Removal Tool to eliminate the currently installed version

reboot

download the previous version from here:  http://norton.com/nis12

activate using your current key, if the program doesn't call home and do it automatically

run live update until the program tells you that you have downloaded and installed all of the updates

then you shouuld be good to go

Not sure why you want to drop back a version. The various changes in the new version will give you improved protection.

Regardless, stay well and surf safe

I would recommend following this entire outline...

Before you begin the Remove/Install process be sure to do the following two steps:

1) Save (write down) your product license key - You can find this using your online Norton account (link in the main GUI).  Another place to look for it is the "Norton Internet Security_Key.txt" file located in the Symantec folder in your "Documents" or "My Documents" (name depends on OS version) folder.
2) Go into the main GUI /Settings and Export your ID Safe to a local .DAT file.

Next download the current version of NIS2012 from:
http://buy-download.norton.com/downloads/2012/NISNAV/US/19.8/NIS-ESD-19-8-0-14-EN.exe

Next use your System Control Panel (add/remove programs or Programs and Features, depending on OS version) to uninstall the NIS2013 version. If you have any difficulty uninstalling you may need to use the Norton Removal Tool to finish cleaning things up.  Do not use the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool - that will only serve to put you right back where you already are, namely back onto the 2013 version. The remove only version of the tool can be downloaded here:

http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=kb20080710133834EN_EndUserPro...

Note: If after running the removal tool, your web browser opens and goes to the Norton product download page, just close the browser - you already downloaded what you'll need next.

Now run the NIS-ESD-19-8-0-14-EN.exe installer that you downloaded earlier.

You may be prompted to re-enter your activation key (which you saved earlier) at some point during or after the install process.

Now repeatedly run LiveUpdate until it reports nothing more to do.

Next go into the main GUI / Settings and configure your preferred product settings.

Finally, re-setup your ID safe (either local or online) and Import  your ID's from the local .DAT file image that you saved earlier.

You should now be back on the most current build of NIS2012.

John

Hi,

I am in a similar situation - trying to revert from NIS2013 to NIS2012. I have successfully reinstalled 2012 (after having to do a system restore because the NIS2013 uninstaller corrupted system drivers).

The problem now is that I cannot import Norton Identity Safe data. I created a .DAT file from 2013, however when I try and import it I get an error message which says: "Unable to process the file for import. Please make sure the file is valid and try again."

Is there any way to get the data back? Otherwise I have just lost hundreds of login details.

I just found out this morning that the 2013 version .DAT file export is not backward compatible with the 2012 products.

So to recover your IDs you will have to:

- Upgrade again to the 2013 product.

- Import your saved .DAT file back into the 2013 product.

- Export your data again, this time using the .CSV format (not the .DAT) format.

- Uninstall the 2013 product.

- Reinstall the 2012 product.

My sincere apologies for the added  steps this recover will require you to make.

Perhaps one the Forum Mods would change the previous posted oultine to correct the incorrect .DAT information with the .CSV info?

John

Fortunately I found a backup file that I exported in March which I have successfully restored. That contains most of the logins that I have saved over the last few years. There are a couple of more recent ones missing from that backup, but I have readded those manually.

The moral of the story is thank goodness I always make frequent backup copies of things!

Thanks for your help though.

TCWORLD,

You said NIS2013 installation "corrupted system drivers"?   This would be an very important reason to not install NIS2013, but instead install NIS2012.

I so far still have upgraded from NIS2011 to NIS2013 and am not sure yet what effect my corrupted system drivers may be doing.    Anyhow, I might have chosen to try to run the installer file just for NIS2012 if I had known that Check For New Version was going to give me NIS2013.

Just to clarify that, it was Uninstalling 2013 that corrupted something, not installing it (I uninstalled it because I hate the new toolbar and wanted the old one back). All I know really is that after uninstalling norton, I restarted the computer and the CPU started spinning at full speed - which from past experience with my motherboard means that the AHCI driver is either not installed or corrupted - one of the results of which is that asus q-fan stops hence the fan speed change. It also resulted in continuous BSODs shortly after boot. System Restoring back a couple of days fixed the problem and then I just had to install NIS2012 again.

Could someone at Symantec please explain the process of downloading v19.x of NIS, removing v20.x and re-installing 19.x.

Thanks very much.
