How to "stop" Norton Security DeLuxe

Windows Edge & Google Chrome user, and I have been using Norton for 15 years now.

My yearly Norton Security DeLuxe expired yesterday, so I filled in the Product key of the new AV I had bought a week earlier, and downloaded it. I repeated this five times, installing kept failing. So I did a total uninstall, but when I start installing once more,  I am warned that "Norton is currently running, please close it first". And that message I get every time I do a new attempt.  I though Uninstalling was a surefire method to kill a tool firmly... :)

In Configuration, the program is featured (again). The Norton Icon in my task bar has not returned, though., so I can't open the Norton dashboard. In my address bar at the top, I carry another Norton icon, green with a white check mark. As far as can see it was never deleted in the Unistall. When I open it, I see "Norton rating safe", and under the items four zeros. Nothing gives me an inkling that it's active.

I had to revert to Windows Defender Antivirus....

But the most important thing: how do I stop Norton from being active? (it obviously is). As long as things are 'running', I can't install my new version.

Btw, I can't give the product's version number, the box nor the info inserts mention that, all I see is a release date: 2017....but that can't be problem, can it? The Product key is "new".

Okay, thanks bjm.

"Prod key Invalid"..... That's impossible, it has never been used before.

--> Chat with Official Norton Support  --> Call Official Norton Support

...Still not working. Half way through, the installation (finally!) stops; and there's the request to type in my Product key again. Result: "Prod key Invalid"..... That's impossible, it has never been used before.

I removed the Norton program once more and reverted back to Windows Defense AV. As I'm not very technical I mailed a friend to tell me what shield against random malware ("Zero-day" or something?) I can use.

Sigh.

...Sorry, I just found that in the taskbar a Norton inlog tab was still open.... It was hidden under a nameless icon! After I closed it, Norton Uninstall could finally be finished.

So I'll give installing the new version another try.
