How to uninstall Norton

I can’t uninstall Norton 360 without a password other than my account password.

I’ve been trying for several days to fix the Settings admin issue but Norton support has not been able to resolve the issue. So I canceled my subscription, (btw, they won’t refund the final year) and I’m trying to uninstall it from my computer. It won’t uninstall without that password.

I was using Norton 360 Deluxe, vers. 25.2.9898.1422v on a Windows 10 PC.

Every time I click Settings on the Home page, it asks for a password but it doesn’t like my account password.

I can’t even snip screenshots to post here.

Can someone please tell me how to remove this software from my PC?

Thank you - )

Try your Windows Admin account password. That is required for many Norton settings.

I tried that - it didn’t accept it either. I can’t even uninstall it through Windows because it wants this password that doesn’t exist.

Hello @Momof3
are you referring to Norton - settings password?

Um, did you/support try Norton_360_Remover tool → ‘Reboot to Safe mode’?

Yes, I was on the phone with tech support & they tried that too. Same issue, it wanted a password to do it.

Hello @Momof3
from Safe Mode?
Please confirm support tried from Safe Mode??
and you’re Norton 360 v25.2.9898?
and you had previouly setup Norton 360 with a settings password? and you forgot password??

That’s the issue - I don’t recall ever creating a separate password for Norton settings, so I don’t know why it’s asking for one. I have a separate password manager outside of Norton and there’s not one in there for that purpose, just for the Norton account.

I rarely use my laptop anymore and the last time I used it this wasn’t an issue. I just happened to be checking on something else a few days ago & was clicking on each of the menu options and when I got to Settings that window popped up. I’ve never seen it before.

I entered my Norton password which it didn’t like. Then I tried my Windows password and that didn’t work either. I ended up locking myself out of Norton completely and had to wait till today to get back in.

If I had created a settings password and just forgot it, is there a way to reset it or create a new one?

sounds like you were locked out of your Norton account?

Hello @Momof3

Um, if your Settings is behind a password. How did you check version number?
Please confirm you tried running Norton 360 Remover v25 → Reboot to Safe Mode → Remove?
Please confirm support tried running Norton 360 Remover v25 → Reboot to Safe Mode → Remove?

Please confirm you’re Norton 360 v25.2.9898? Yes, that’s my version.
Please confirm you tried running Norton 360 Remover v25 → Reboot to Safe Mode → Remove? Yes
Please confirm support tried running Norton 360 Remover v25 → Reboot to Safe Mode → Remove? Yes

But I just got it to work! In Safe Mode, I was logged in with my user account, which is an admin account, but it didn’t work.

This time I logged in Safe Mode as an Adminstrator, not just an account with admin privileges, and it worked.

Thank you so much for those screen shots - that’s what I used to walk me through it. The password popup window didn’t appear and it started very uninstalling very slowly, so I just held my breath & let it do its thing.

Success, with much thanks to you!!! Thank you again for the help, I truly appreciate it!!!

Now I have to find another AV product for my computer

Well, that’s a relief.
Okay…so from a Windows Standard user account = no joy…and from Windows Admin user account = joy.

Sorry, I always forget to mention Windows Admin user account…because, I’m always in Windows Admin user account…and Reboot to Safe Mode → Remove worked for me.

@peterweb knows I always forget to mention - Windows Admin user account.

I’m flabergasted that Norton support did not help you.
Yes, run away…run far away from Norton.

posting for users that pass this way

I found it on the Windows Program Manager screen, in the details part of the screen.

Yes…of course. Thanks

for Norton replacement…how about Bitdefender

I’m still shaking my head in disbelief that Norton support did not help you.

I was surprised myself. I’ve used Norton for years and have always been able to get help from them, but this time over several days & 2 different tech support members I got nowhere. Then when I asked to cancel my subscription which still had a year to go, I was told they could only cancel the renewal & not issue a refund for the remaining period.

Uh, that kind of set me off. I let them talk me into a 2 year term & then they pull this. They said I would have to talk to Best Buy about it. I didn’t buy the 2 year subscription from Best Buy, I bought it from Norton directly.

So, that’s where I’m at now. I’ll take a look at BitDefender. I hate having to replace Norton after 5 years but they don’t seem to provide the same level of service as in the past.

I’m so grateful for your help. It really took a lot of stress off my shoulders resolving the issue.

Most likely I’ll be replacing my computer later this year or early next year since Windows 10 will no longer be supported. When I get the new computer I’ll have to decide on a new antivirus for it. I don’t use it much but there are some things I only do on it & not my other devices. So I still need a good antivirus I can trust. They all seem to have their weaknesses. Time will tell but I’m going to keep doing the research until then & hope I make the right choice when it’s time.
