I have a Toshiba Satellite, Windows 8 and with 360 as the security package. Some months back I noticed that the sys tray icon for Norton did not appear so I clicked on the Icon to start it and got the error as above and was guided to the support web page which gave the apparent solutions. I knew that there was no way a virus or for that matter spy ware had found its way on my system however i followed the procedure scanned everything and came up with nothing. No other security packages are loaded so the exercise as set out was not the solution.
I had had some other minor issues with software not running correctly and had contacted Toshiba in respect of that and what they advised me to restart the computer but to hold the shift key so that the machine does a complete reboot rather than a partial reboot so after some hours of stuffing around I though I would try this and of course, magically the issue disappeared.
I am somewhat vigilant and don't run anything without Norton running and 9 out of ten times the system boots up correctly. Toshiba say that if the computer boots correctly when the shift key is held it is not a Toshiba problem and is most likely a Windows compatibility issue with Norton.
Devil and the deep blue sea, If every ten starts I have to wait for a shut down and a full reboot just so I can be sure I have Norton working properly It is fast reaching time to change virus checker supplier.
Everything works corectly when the icon does not show up and a check of task manager shows Norton running but trying to get the icon in the sys tray results in the error warning.
I am posting this in the hope that a wiser person than I can resolve the issue.
