I just tried to install a new copy of Norton 360 to continue my protection, but the exsisting program does not recognise it and will not update. Does anyone have any suggestions. I have used Norton for many years and this is the first time that something like this has occured

Welcome, Are you using the features within the program to do the upgrade/update? If you are installing a totally new copy of the product over an existing installed copy it may not be seamless depending on the versions.
