I think Norton is freezing my computer

Recently; my computer has been freezing up.

The programs won't respond, I can't open ctrl alt del and I have to take the battery off my computer to shut it down, so it's not frozen.

I scanned my computer; there are no viruses.  I used Norton Power Eraser, said there were no threats.  One of the support techs here told me that there were no issues with Norton.  Also that my computer was protected and there are no viruses.

She said that another program was causing problems.

The only other program I can think of is Mozilla Firefox.  My computer freezes when that browser is on.

I went through there forums and did what I could to fix it but my computer is still freezing...even when I type stuff now.

Then my computer froze again after Norton popped up with a message on running background tasks.

So I don't know what's going on.  I don't know if Mozilla Firefox or Norton's background tasks are the culprit.

Other anti-virus programs seem to have the same problems.  I don't use Internet Explorer because of ads that can contain viruses and I'm waiting for Adblock Plus to release their program for Internet Explorer.

I don't know what else to do besides disabling background tasks for Norton but I don't know how to do that and I don't know which ones to do and I don't know what disabling background tasks is going to do.

I don't have any other viral or spyware scanner.

I said Adblock Plus; that's not a scanner.  It's an add-on that blocks advertisements on websites.  It also blocks those random pop-ups that appear in websites.  Sometimes when I went online, advertisements would install viruses, so I got Adblock Plus to prevent that from happening and it works beautifully.

Wait, I thought that's what Norton Power Eraser was for; malware and spyware, also those serious viruses.  Doesn't Norton Internet Security detect also Spyware and Malware?

I have had this problem with the old 2012 version also and though the new 2013 would be better,,it's not still does the same thing, even with nothing else running, I walk away from the computer and Norton starts a background scan or what ever and my computer locks up and the only way to get it back is to power down with the power button.. In the past i had norton ppl web x my computer and the reinstalled it and it worked for a few weeks then back to the way it was / is. I guess i should have learned. Any help????????????
