Why is it that NIS does not identify the year on the main window? It should explicitly say for example NIS 2011 or NIS 2010.
Now as a long time community member and Guru I know you can derive this from the Support > About window but one should not have to do this to simply know what year their product is.
This suggestion also applies to all other Norton products.
May be not on main window directly after product name, but in "about" menu it is really must be. internal names like 17.8.0.5 or 18.1.0.37 are not helping to the average users to identify what product version they have.
So simply to apply this and much more users will knew their Norton version.
Or you could guess by the way it looks;) just kidding. Seriously, include the version number ie 2011 in either the about screen, the main gui, or both. It would much easier for people to identify what versions they have. Norton 2007 and below state their version number in their gui.
In my time of involvement in the Norton Community I have seen many users who were on older version years of the product, (NAV, NIS, etc). I firmly believe that the fact that the year is not on the main window (or at least in About) is the reason that many did not upgrade - simply because it was not readily apparent that they were running out of date versions!
Many users expect that they run Live Update and so should already have the latest version and don't realize that live update only applies to the version year they already have.
Having the year identified on the main GUI would make it very easy for a user to know if they were out of date or not.
As it is, many don't realize it (or think about it) until they have some problem or question and post in the community whereupon "old timers" like myself will let them know.
I agree... I think it would be a good idea to have the application year prominently displayed in the main dialog. In fact I would go so far as to suggest that the current installed version also be included...i.e. Norton Internet Security 2011 (vr. 18.1.0.37). I think this alone would make things easier for your support staff as well as the good folks who volunteer here in the forums.
No idea why this was taken out; I mean it is only four numbers! I found it really useful, and I think other users would as well, so, if it's not too much trouble adding four numbers to the product, then please could this be re-introduced. Am sure your super-computers will be able to manage that; if they do go in to Meltdown, I think it might be time Symantec Upgraded their equipment!
Found out more on this. This was a decision made in 2009 product year since the product is on a SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) model. It still seems reasonable to show the year perhaps in the "about" section but I will have to dive in more to find different opinions.
The thing I would say is that without the year identified in plain sight, it makes it difficult for the average user to even know what product year they have or to realize they are out of date.
Many times it is not until they come to the forum for help on some problem that myself or some other knowledgeable member lets them know.
Something like this is too important not to make it obvious.
While I cannot suggest/recommend that Symantec follow the example of a company not to be named having the year visible on the first/main screen is logical. It's in the name now but the name isn't displayed when you bring the program up to use

My vote is NOT to actual include a version (year) indicator, but to include A BIGGER warning that a Free Newer version is available and recommended to be installed. There have been extra versions updates that occurred mid-year! So just saying say that you have NIS/NAV 2011 or N360 V5 2011, is not enough.
Any updates which occur mid year are going to be handled via live update and unless the user has turned OFF live update, you will automatically get all updates within your current product year version.
The Norton product by default also automatically downloads new product year versions and alerts the user to the fact that a new year is available. This can be turned off in 2011 versions through Misc. Setitngs. But many users in past years have ignored this and continue to run out of date product year versions.
By having the year clearly shown in the main user interface, it will be much more visible to users that they are out of date.
The full version is then available from Support > About which is always requested on the forum. But since this should be kept automatically up to date via Live Update, it is far less likely that a user will be out of date on the exact version, unless again they have disabled live update which is not recommended.
We find it far more common on the forums here for users to be running only product year versions, even as old as NIS 2006 and having that year identified on the main screen would be highly beneficial.
