I have a question regarding the Norton account. I like to use only the protection feature (no online backups or parental control etc.) If someone has access to my Norton account (if the respective e-mail is compromised e.g.) what actions could he do to my PC? Could he see pages I visit or lock my PC? Can I limit the purpose of the account just to management of the license from the program or from the account?
We have told you multiple times. There is no way that any device associated with your Norton Account can be accessed from that Norton Account.
My link to the Norton Family feature is the only device monitoring that can be done from the Norton Account. And that is only if the Family feature is setup on your devices. It is not set up by default.
OK. Just imagine this scenario. A husband gives the key to his wife. She installs Norton Deluxe on her PC.
- Would it be possible for the husband to see any information about the wife’s computer (location, passwords, visited websites etc.?
- Would it be possible to gain access to some data or even to the pc?
Sorry for naive question…
FAQ: Two-factor authentication for your account
As stated, someone with access to your account could see and modify anything in there that you could. They could not gain access to your computer. Use 2FA, as suggested and this wouldn't be anything you would need to worry about.
Here is the Norton FAQ for the Norton Family feature which is what is offered for the Parental Control.
Looking through this, and from what I tested a couple of years ago, Norton Family only monitors different parameters you choose and reports to you so you can take action to teach the proper online behaviour. The only 'control' you have from your computer is choosing which Family features you wish to monitor and some usage times on those devices.
Can someone help to clarify if parental control is enabled from the program itself or from the Norton account? I had to switch from Sophos Home to… „now looking for alternatives“ since you can control the PCs connected to you Sophos account through the Web interface which is scary and does not make much sense for home users.
If someone does gain access to your Norton Account, there is nothing in there that can give access to your devices. You only see the status of features on your devices.
If you have any information on your Norton account then anyone who has access to your Norton account can see those things just like you can. That is why 2FA is very important as an added security feature in addition to your password.
If you are concerned that a hacker breaks into the Norton servers for all accounts not just yours there is not much you can do about it. That would be up to Norton to protect.
You can always shut off any features on your account that you feel uncomfortable about.
But Norton has a parental control which allows me to see the visited website and localize „lost“ device. I have contacted Norton support Germany and they assured that anyone having access to my account can perform those actions. I do just want to use the Norton protection capabilities and the account should not be a possibility to access my pc or some information about my pc. How should I deal with the information from the Support Team are the wrong?
Any hacker that did gain access your account would only be able to block your Norton products from working on your devices. They would not have any access to your devices from your Norton Account, so they could not cause any security problems on them.
Make sure 2FA is set up to be more secure.
If somebody had access to your account they would see any personal info you have put in and be able to delete or add licenses to your subscription. If they delete your license to your machine your Norton program would deactivate but it would not affect your machine otherwise.
