In install Upgrade Loop

Norton advised me that there was an upgrade available so I started it running. It did the download and then said it needed a restart. After the restart, it went straight back into checking for updates only to advise me again that an Install Upgrade was available. Repeat the process and the same thing happens. I have now completed this at least five times leaving it overnight just in case a fix had been implemented.

Checking the system, Norton is no longer in the Launchpad and isn't listed in the Applications folder (partly expected). I don't seem to be able to find any reference to Norton or Symantec in the critical folders on the system.

I am still on OS X El Capitan (10.11.6) and the App Store isn't finding an upgrade to macOS Sierra. I see Sierra isn't available until 20 September so I am on the latest that I can install.

@mary_c: What the exact Norton app (e.g., Norton Security for Mac, NIS for Mac, etc.) are you using? Whatever, contacting Norton Support would help you out fast.

BTW...

@kiwiet: you may review this page "Removing all Norton programs for Mac by using the RemoveSymantecMacFiles removal utility".

Thanks... angel

I did a chat with Norton support who accessed my machine remotely to uninstall the product, cleanup any left over files, and then do a fresh install of the product. If you knew which scripts they used for this then you could run it yourself. There cleanup script has some side effects such as removing the image behind the login screen and the background image you might have selected.

Given that the process is not published, having support fix it seems the only choice.

I am having the same problem. Norton message that an upgrade was available, so I ran the upgrade. It tells me Installing Upgrade, you need to Restart the computer. I restart, it asks me to agree to the terms, and then it says Installing - but ends up back at the screen telling me to Restart.

I am running OS X 10.12.1 on an iMac mid2010.

I obtained the original Norton software via Comcast/xfinity. Their website does not provide an up-to-date installer.

I don't know where you got that picture from but it isn't my Mac. The date on my Mac is correct and always has been. Check the correct image.

@kiwiet:

If I may ask, have you checked the Date on your Mac? Please try updating or correcting that settings first.

Mac OS X Sierra Version 10.12.2. The screen shot is the same as that in the 18 September 2016 message. I didn't get the free upgrade message on this boot so can't give a screen shot of it.

Thanks for reporting this issue @kiwiet.

Could you give me the following details:

  • OS X version?
  • Screenshot(s) showing the problem?

This has reoccured with the latest free upgrade offer. After doing an uninstall sequence of the old version, it is now going through a check for an upgrade, install, and restart. The problem is that the install hasn't completed so there is no product active.

By finding where Norton had placed the file that was causing ti to get into an install loop and then reinstalling, I have partially solved the problem. Norton isn';t coming up on the status bar and I am not sure that it is working with Safari. When I get time, I will do a complete uninstall and reinstall.

I downloaded the latest version and installed it. Although this seemed to initially clear the problem, on the next restart of the machine, I got the same "Software Upgrade" window. I have attached a screen shot of the window.

If I click the "Upgrade Now", it uninstalls Norton for Mac and then requests a restart which gets me back to the same window.
