Inability to get put through to a human chat advisor with a case number despite many hours trying (over several days) to renew my now expired Norton. It is futile trying to get installation help

Did you register new Key with your Norton account?
Amazon Key may be geo-locked.

fwiw ~ I’ll register new Key with my Norton account and activate auto renewal…and then contact support - request new Key term added to current term.

Norton probably wants you to provide payment profile for automatic renewal.
Afterwards you may Unsubscribe and Delete your payment profile.
Do you already have a new Norton plan Key.
Do you have an expiring Norton plan installed…at this time?
