Include pc configuration details in user profile (optionally of course)

It would help in reviewing posts, or providing responses, if we could see the configuration specifics of the computer being used. Much of this could be captured by Norton to feed to the forum profile.  OS version and level, Norton version and level, etc.

It would be helpful although some people object to any system that grabs their data without permission .... even if it happens all the time if you don't see it you don't know!

There could also be problems for people posting from different devices.  For example if you have a problem with one machine you may post from another (possibly a machine belonging to someone else who may not want its details broadcast), or you may post from a mobile device while asking questions about a desktop....

I post on mobile subjects from my laptop, and sometimes on N360 issues from my phone.  An automatic grab of details from the posting machine could lead to a lot of confusion.

Some people include machine and operating system details in their signatures, I see a sense in that, but would be uneasy about an auto grab...

And while I believe the OP said "optionally", that implies knowing to turn it on ........ and off at other times.

It would help in reviewing posts, or providing responses, if we could see the configuration specifics of the computer being used. Much of this could be captured by Norton to feed to the forum profile.  OS version and level, Norton version and level, etc.

I'll clarify my support for this suggestion.

I was assuming the user would enter this information manually when they registered for the forum. I agree that some automated capture of the information would not be advisable. I too use multiple devices to post here. This may or may not indicate the device having the problem.

That sounds like a reasonable idea, but how would the information be displayed?  Would the system spec's be shown for all of your devices?  This could also be confusing and we would still need to ask for the specifics of the problem machine.

Maybe a good idea in theory, but I'm not sure it is workable.

Excellent points guys.  Sometime theory and implementation are two different things.  Maybe just a small text prompt at posting time suggesting to add system details if pertinant to the issue.  I think the vast majority of questions posed are pretty irrelevant of the system anyway, but you Guru's would know better than me.  Thanks for the responses.
