Checking the web site I see that the report the following under system status..

"We are currently experiencing intermittent problems with downloads requested in BIL and GridFloat formats. The problem is being investigated by our staff."

So this may not be a problem with your m/c

Nice spot, Clive. Looks like they have not tracked down the problem as yet.

mtom - do you have any other example sites we could check against?

Thanks,

Hi.

Got this major problem. Norton’s 360 detected Inforstealer on the PC. Norton’s requests a reboot. It seems to be decativated, but not deleated. Every time I start the PC, I get the warning and instructions. I therefore, went to the Symantec site to work out hot to eliminate the virus properly. I followed the instructions.

http://www.symantec.com/security_response/…-99&tabid=3

However, they are inadequate. At step 3, I’m directed to to start the PC in safe mode and then run a remote full system scan. However, the form of safe mode disables the network connects. As such, no remote system scan can be conducted. I therefore, I start the PC in safe with network connections with the F8 key, but the PC won’t allow me to continue with the a scan.

So, that procedure is a failure. I can’t get past step 3. I therefore, email the symantic support services.

I recive an email with different instructions:

1.Delete the Windows temporary files.
2.Remove virus thread.

1)To delete the Windows temporary files, please click on the URL for instructions:

Title: ‘Deleting Windows temporary files: Manual steps’
Document ID: 2006100212410939
Web URL:
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgen…006100212410939

2) To remove the virus threat, please click on the URL below and follow the on-screen instructions:

Title: ‘What to do if you suspect that you have a threat when using Norton 360’
Document ID: 2007091422291175
Web URL: http://service1.symantec.com/support/norto…007091422291175

I do this. The only temp file I can’t delete is ‘cqprouxp.dat’. I do the ‘virus and spywear check’ as directed. Next day, I turn the PC on and I get the same old warning about Inforstealer. Hence, it has not removed the virus.

Worse, much worse, I now get timeout errors when I attempt to download data from a US government website <http://seamless.usgs.gov/> that use frequently for work. I was able to download this data okay hours prior to applying the procedure to eliminate the virus. A noticable thing is that I no longer get the ‘activex’ warning in the bar at the top of window in Internet Explorer. It just get a delay and then it times out.

I therefore, phone the support services at symantec . I’m rediected to the website instructions. However, now I can’t get past step 2 because of the timeout error. I can’t update the viurus definitions. I phone support services again. The upshot is that they are going to charge me over $100 to get one of their tech staff to deal with the problem.

I’ve since done a system restore. Also, checked a few other sites where I’ve downloaded zip files in the past. I can download from the other sites, but I’m still not able to download from mthe USGS site.

Any ideas?

Matthew.

Hello Matthew,

I'm sorry to learn of the frustration the removal of this thread has caused you. Two quick things to try.

First - the document on "what to do if you suspect a threat" has a section called "What if this didn't work or your Norton program won't install?" - click there for some additional threat removal information.

Second - for the ActiveX problem, it's hard to know for sure, but you should be able to disable the ActiveX controls through IE (Tools / Manage Add-Ons). Once you have disabled the Symantec controls, and if the problem persists to the point of needing support, you should be able to install new ones directly through One Click Support.

Please let us know how it goes.

Matt
