I was checking trust level of ALL FILES and hit on bit5d52.tmp as being UNPROVEN. When I tried to locate it, got error: "File not found or info not available for this file format". How can I find it?
Hi Tallahatchiebri,
The Application Ratings and Reputation Scan results are representations of the trust levels that Norton assigns to files. The purpose of extablishing trust levels is to allow Norton to work more efficiently, and has nothing to do with determining whether or not a file is actually malicious. Trusted files are files that are known to be good and can be skipped during scans - this allows for shorter scan times. Files that do not meet the strict standards for being fully trusted will be monitored more closely - not because they are considered dangerous, but because their trustworthiness has not been established. Unproven files are simply files that Norton does not have enough information about in order to assign a trust level. You should not attempt to modify or delete any file based on its trust level. Application ratings are a tool that Norton uses to enhance performance, not to detect malware.
If the temp file is still on your computer you should be able to find it using Windows Search.
I have, according to Norton File Insight, 34 "unproven" files.
33 of these files are locatable with a click when Norton gives me additional info. (No need to search Win. Norton does it for me.)
1 File dubbed "bit5d52.tmp" causes Norton to tell me "File not found or info not available for this file format"
Since file extension .tmp is a temporary file created by a downloaded program or is still being used because my OS hasn't finished installing something, I am concerned that this is a left over cookie or glyph that is resisting Disk Cleanup, and resists detection as a temporary file in disk cleanup, which shows 0 bytes, or worse a memory resident virus.
Based on your reply for which I'm grateful, I Indeed tried WIN search for this file and it said: This folder is
empty. I deleted browsing history and looked again at Temp Files. 0.
