Installing NIS 2012 gives error message "norton internet security has stopped working"

I had installed a purchased version of NIS2012 and installed it without realizing I already had AVG installed. I uninstalled AVG then reinstalled NIS but it was not properly installed. Reinstallation was not working and Norton Removal Tool hung everytime. So I used Revo Uninstaller to remove NIS 2012 completely so I could install it from scratch.

Now if I try to install it, it says ""norton internet security has stopped working" after I enter Product Key and exits. It is not purchased online so this version does not show up on my online norton account.

You will need to run the removal tool for mcAfee and the removal tool for Norton and do a clean installation.  I'm not sure Revo will work on things that are half installed/half uninstalled.

Hi delphinium,

Thanks for the quick reply. With McAfee tool, it gave an error: "Incomplete Uninstallation: Some or all files may not have been removed successfully". Here's the log:

The Norton Removal Tool starts and then hangs in the background as a hung process. Nothing happens. :(

Help solicited please... I have purchased NIS 2012 but it's going to be a waste.. :(

I think delphinium  meant to give you a link to AVG not to McAfee ...

Try this one:

http://www.avg.com/us-en/utilities

which is a link to their download page -- you need to chose from the first two according to whether you have 32 bit or 64 bit WIndows -- ask here if you are not sure.

After running that try the Norton Removal Tool again and run it a couple of times with a reboot in between.

Thanks huwyngr,

Tried that, but every time NRT hangs a as a background process.

Can it be becauseit is a 1 PC version and I've already installed it once on this PC?

I don't know enough to say why NRT could be hanging during an attempt to remove and clean up NIS but in view of everything you've done including using Revo (which is not recommended by Norton since it doesn't know as much as Norton does about where things are -- I do use Revo myself on occasion for other products so I'm not anti-Revo ) that I don't know what is actually on your machine at present.

I take it you have rebooted the computer after each action ... uninstalling, installing, cleaning up .... ?

I'll see if I can get some more help on clearing up messes!

Meanwhile, here is my boilerplate on background information on yoursystem:

What version of Windows are you using including Service Packs and whether 32 bit or 64 bit.0

If you get any error messages please give the exact wording of them as well as any other background that could be helpful.

Please also say what internet browser you are using -- name and version number ...

Did you buy your NIS 2012 from a retail store, on line from an authorized dealer or on eBay or similar?

Where did you get the Norton Removal Tool from? Did you run the normal WIndows Unistall/Remove Programs first?

Do you have the system restore disks to put your machine back in original condition plus backups of your personal data,

applications you have installed etc in case that is the only way out?

I think I tried to mess up AVG removal before installing NIS the first time. When the installation showed that NIS is installed and it was still not activated, after reboots of course, I uninstalled it. Reinstallation put me into this mess.

Here's the info:

Windows 7 SP1 Home 32 bit OS

Firefox 6

Purchased NIS from a well known online retailer

Worst bit: do not have the system restore.

If this helps:

1. When I start NRT and it hangs in the background, if I restart the system after that, it kinda resumes and again gives the error "Norton Internet Security has stopped working". So maybe there is some process that is prohibiting it to run????

2. In the "Services", I see a service named Norton Internet Security, the status of which is stopped. Starting it manually gives an error: "Windows could not start the Norton Internet Security service on Local Computer. Error 5: Access is denied."

Thanks for the information .... I've asked for help.

Since running the real AVG uninstaller but failing to get the NRT to run have you tried installing NIS again?

Try downloading this file:

New NIS 2012:

Click on this link -- NIS 2012 This will download a single file of around 100MB which you should save on your hard drive where you can use it again if necessary -- Do not select Run but use Save when asked and remember where you put it!

After you download it, find where you saved it to and Right Mouse CLick on the downloaded file and select Run As Administrator and OK any questions Windows asks you. This runs the installation with elevated privileges and I find it may work better.

Let us know how that goes and if it doesn't -- any error messages you get.

And watch out for suggestions from others who may have run into this kind of road block.

I ran into a similar roadblock a couple months ago, but I have no simple solution to offer.

The similarities are:

---I tried to install another AV product, then uninstall it, but the uninstall wasn't complete.

---After that I tried to re-install NIS 2011, but the installation wouldn't run to completion.

---After that I tried to run NRT to start over again with a clean install, but NRT always stalled (never ran to completion).

Finally, after a lot of manual work, I managed to clean out the system and get the re-installation to work, but it wasn't easy and I don't remember all of the steps that I had to go through.

One thing you might do -- and which I would recommend -- is to try to look at the Norton logs, both for the failed installation, and for the failed NRT run..

The logs are usually stored in the "All Users" area.  Scan for NortonInstaller  (one word, no spaces) to find the folder where the NortonInstaller logs are kept. The logs are in 7z  Zip format, so you will have to have a utility that can unzip this kind of file.

  install log folder: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\NortonInstaller\Logs\

I think the NRT logs are stored in a different folder, but in the same general area, perhaps in a folder called Norton.

Hi Nitin,

Did you try running the Norton Removal Tool in Safe Mode? If not, please try that, and let us know the result.
