Installing Norton on additional PC

Hi everyone,

Help or advise please.

When I bought a laptop, I purchased Norton Internet Security in April 2010, with a one year subscription and 3 PC's.

The product was a download from a Norton site. It did not have a suffix year, for example 2010 or 2011.

I have only installed on one PC, and have 120 days subscription left.

My daughter has a new laptop and I want to install using the product key from my previous purchase, however when I go to the download center, the nearest product name I can find is Norton Internet Security 2011. Will my product key work for this or must I go to another site.

Thanks in advance

Hi Paysource,

Welcome to the Norton Community. On the computer you have NIS already intalled on, what is the version reported from Help & Support > About? Most likely it is NIS 2010 since you installed back in April but the version number will identity this. If it starts with 17.xx it is NIS 2010.

What version of Windows do you have on your computer as well as your daughter's computer and are they 32 or 64 bit? Does your daughter's computer have a different security software installed on it currently? Most computers do come with trial versions of some security software like Norton, McAfee, etc. I need to know which one is currently installed as it will need to be removed first. It should be uninstalled through Control panel and then run a special removal tool provided by the vendor of that security software before attempting to install NIS.

For your computer you are entitled to a free update to NIS 2011 since your subscription is current. Please follow the procedure below.

Your daughter's computer would follow the same basic guidelines except please don't install NIS 2011 until we have determined which security software might be installed already and have properly removed it.

If you use Identity Safe you should back up this data first as a precaution. Please see this link for details on how to do this.

Please download the full version of NIS 2011 from here. Please note that this is the English version so please let me know if you need a different language and I will provide the appropriate link.

Also as a precaution you can make note of your product key which you can get from your Norton Account.

For your protection, disconnect from the Internet before continuing.

If you have NIS 2010 (17.xx from Help & Support > About) and things are working normally you can install NIS 2011 over the top without uninstalling old version first.

Then please install NIS 2011 from the full version downloaded earlier. Once installed please reconnect back to the Internet and run Live Update repeatedly (rebooting as requested) until it reports there are no more updates. For your computer your current product key should automatically be picked up and Yes this same key is valid for NIS 2011.

Also please note that when you do install NIS 2011 on your daughter's computer it will pick up the subscription days you have remaining on your computer. The clock starts when the first copy of NIS is installed on any computer.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Allen

Hi AllenM,

Thanks for the reply.

Basically I have bought my daughter a laptop for Xmas, and rather than start downloading and setting up on xmas morning, I am trying to have it ready for her.

Please see the following info re your reply.

  • There is no 17.xx, or I cannot find one, so I will presume it is NIS 2010.
  • On my laptop I have Vista, my daughter has Windows 7.
  • They are both 64 bit.
  • My daughters laptop has a 30 day trial version of Mcafee. This has not yet been activated. It is a Dell Inspiron, Pentium Dual Core.
  • Norton automatically updates every few hours on my laptop. To be honest, I am not concerned about updating on mine, as it has worked fine, unless I need to.

If I uninstall the McAfee, can I go ahead and install?

Thanks again.

Hi Paysource,

Thanks for the additional information. On your computer if you bring up the main NIS window you will see a Help & Support menu option in the upper right corner. Click on this and then About, this is where you will see the version of 17.xx, 16.xx or some other number.

I would highly recommend that you upgrade your NIS to the 2011 version. It is important to do this each year since there continue to be further improvements in security and other areas which require the newest version to make use of. You will continue to get virus definitions and such on your current version, but there are also security improvements in the program itself.

On your daughters computer. First you should download the full version of NIS 2011 from the link I provided in my last post. You can also save this to a CD or USB flash drive so that you can use it on both computers and then only have to download it once. Again please let me know if you need a different language than English and I will provide an alternate link.

You should disconnect from the Internet and uninstall McAfee from Control Panel > Uninstall a program.

After that, please run the McAfee removal tool from the following location. This will ensure that McAfee is completely removed and allow NIS to install cleanly.

http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507

After running the McAfee removal tool you can install NIS 2011. Once installed please connect back to the Internet and you can activate it with your product key. If it asks for an email address please be sure to supply the one you used for your installation of NIS. Then please run Live Update repeatedly (rebooting as requested) until it repors there are no more updates.

Hope this helps and please let us know how it goes.

Best wishes.

Allen

Thanks for the reply AllenM,

English is fine.

Excuse my ignorance, (I am one these guys that has just discovered texting/SMS)

I got confused with dowload and install.

Can I take it that I can DOWNLOAD Norton with McAfee still on, get rid of McAfee as described, then INSTALL?

Also when I download, do I run or save to a drive?

Thanks again.

By the way, to our cousins over the pond in the USA,

Happy Thanksgiving.

Hi Paysource,

Yes, you can download NIS 2011 from the link AllenM has indicated with McAfee on, then remove McAfee and finally install NIS :-) When you download the installation file, save it to your desktop. After removing McAfee, right-click on the Norton icon of the installation file and choose "run as administrator", and NIS will proceed to install.

For maximum security, do not remove McAfee from your pc until you have downloaded Norton. You can save the file from AllenM link anywhere on the pc as you want. I prefer saving it on desktop because its easier to find. Do not click run as it will run the program rather than saving it.

To upgrade Norton on your Pc follow the following steps. Since you did not mention what Norton program you had I’m gonna recommend the full uninstall route rather than over the top upgrade.

Please NOTE that this removes ALL Symantec products so be sure to have your license keys ready as you will need to reinstall all your Symantec software products. You can get your Norton product key from your Norton Account.

  1. Download the Norton Removal Tool as well as the Norton Internet Security Installation file to the desktop so that it can be easily found later

  2. Physically disconnect your self from the internet. That could include yanking out the ethernet cable/telephone cable from the back of your computer/turning off your wireless with either the wireless switch on your computer or turning off your router.  This is to prevent any cyber attacks while you are vulnerable.  DO NOT RECONNECT UNTIL MENTIONED!
  3. Back up any identity safe data:
    backup.png

    backup.png
  4. Uninstall the Norton software through the add/remove programs and let your computer reboot.

  5. Upon reboot, run the Norton Removal tool installed earlier.  Upon completion, let your computer to reboot or reboot manually.

  6. Repeat step 4 two more times just to be sure.

  7. Run the Norton Internet Security 2011 installation file downloaded in step 1.  If you are using Windows Vista and above, right click the installation file and select run as adminstrator (as shown in the screenshot below).

  8. Upon the completion of the installation, reconnect your internet.  Then run liveupdate repeatedly until all upgrades are complete.  You may delete the files you downloaded in step 1.

To restore identity safe data

  1. Create a new identity safe profile.
  2. Then Open up the Norton GUI and click on settings.
  3. Click on web settings and then restore identity safe data.
  4. restore.png

  5. Click on yes.

  6.  icon.png

  7. Browse to the location of the .npm file you saved.
  8. backup.png

  9. Click ok on all the menus.

Also, does your daughter's pc able to connect to the internet? If so it would be best to download the file to her pc rather than using a usb stick.

Steps to install Norton on daughter's pc:

1. Download the Norton file from "http://www.Norton.com/nis11". Save file to desktop. Do not click run. Download the McAffee removal tool from "http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507". Save to desktop and do not click run.

2. Disconnect the internet by physically yanking the cable or turning off the wireless switch by pressing f2 or if it doesn't work fn+f2.

3. Go to add or remove programs and uninstall McAffee from your daughters's pc. Follow instructions and opt to remove ALL components. When prompted restart your Pc. After pc have restarted. Check to make sure McAffee is complete gone.

4. Run the McAffee removal tool. Reboot as prompted. Repeat this step at least twice to make sure McAfee is completely gone.

6. Install Norton by right clicking the installation file you downloaded in step 1 and selecting run as administrator. Click yes on the prompt. Follow all direction.

7. Connect to the internet and activate Norton and then running LiveUpdate repeatedly until no updates are left. If it asks you to reboot, do so.

8. If you want to use the same identity safe for your daughter's pc, you can use the .npm file you created in the previous post and as instructed these, restore the back up file.

[edit: Fixed posting error.]

To everyone who has replied, many, many thanks.

I shall try this at the weekend when she is out, so as not to spoil her surprise.

The silly thing is, unlike me she will be able to sort things like this in an instant, but I just wanted it all sorted for xmas morning.

Will let you know how it goes.

Thanks again

Once more..

Happy Thanksgiving

Hi Payource,

You'll be fine if you follow AllenM's excellent instructions.

Unplugging the cable should suffice - yanking it out is considered an overenthusiastic practice leading to possible damage of the cable or port. AllenM has already posted the individual steps.

Hi Tywin7,

You are being redundant. The idea is to post new information when asked not repeat the same things.

I posted the steps above.

And for the daughter's computer with McAfee on it.

And it is also fine to save the downloaded file to a USB flash drive. NIS does not need to be independantly downloaded to both computers.

Best wishes.

Allen

Hi Payource,

We will all be looking forward to hearing of a positive outcome.

Please let us know how things goes or if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Best wishes.

The OP has stated that he is installing NIS on a new laptop computer with McAfee on it and so does not need to run the Norton Removal Tool -- AllenM has already given instructions on using the McAfee removal tool.

Apart from the request made by others not to duplicate information already given in detail by others -- although your pictures are informative -- it is not Norton policy to suggest using the Norton Removal Tool as a matter of routine and only to use it if there has been a problem with the system, with the installation of Norton or in its removal, which is what it is designed for.

In all normal cases -- which this one is -- one should either use the normal Windows Remove Programs routine which the module designed by Norton and included in their menu structure or let the excellent removal routine in the modern versions do the job.

Thanks

I have used the wrong word. Implied wrong meaning. Plus, you mentioned saving to usb. Just posting a more clear steps for removing mcaffee and installing Norton.

Hi Tywin7,

It was me who mentioned saving to USB and I suggested saving the NIS full version download installer to a USB flash drive to prevent having to download it twice.

There is nothing unclear about that and there is certainly nothing wrong with saving it to a USB where one can take the USB drive to the second computer and initiate the install there also.
