Installing on a computer without internet access

I have Norton on my laptop and want to put it on my desktop as well. I believe my desktop running on windowns Vista has a virus. I tried to download the .exe file to a usb drive and open it on my desktop.  Unfortunately, the desktop popped up an error message saying it cannot complete automatic installation.

Any suggestions on which file I can download to get norton working on my desktop?

Thanks

My whole problem started because we got a new modem from our ISP. It is directly connected to the desktop. It will NOT work. I have tried everything I can possibly think of and researched some online as well. The problem is with the computer itself because the ethernet cable works when connected to the laptop. I thought installing Norton to the desktop might help save it from a virus because I cannot figure out any other reason the internet would just stop working.

I am going to try what you suggested. Thanks.

Hello tiaraw1982 and welcome to the Community.  I'm going to clutch at a straw and ask which PC was in use when they set up your Internet connection?  I have to tell my ISP when I get a new PC, so they can register the MAC number or something.  They assign a specific PC to a specific internet connection.  Try to plug another PC into the modem and it will not connect.  The way around this is to use a router, then I can connect as many PC's as the router will handle.  Just a thought.

Hi tiaraw1982,

How is the laptop connected to the modem?

On the desktop you can run the Windows Network Diagnostic to try to pinpoint the problem:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/The-doctor-is-in-Using-Network-Diagnostics-in-Windows-Vista

You can also check in Control Panel>Internet Options>connections >Lan settings to see if "automatically detect settings" is checked, and to make sure that proxy settings is unchecked.

You may need to reboot the machine to see if it will automatically manage the connection to the new router.

What kind of Internet connection do you have? DSL? Some ISPs require a user name and password to access the internet. Is that true with your ISP? Do you have any software from your ISP installed on the computer that works?
