I have the Intelligent Skip Scanning option set to the default of "on." From the Help Files passage below, I am unclear as to whether the skipped filetypes are also ignored by real time protection and/or single-file scan, e.g. context-menu (as opposed to idle/manual system scans and email scanning). Can anyone answer this for me? I am especially concerned as I have email scanning disabled and I don't want to enable it because it conflicts with my email program -- and besides, most of my email is encrypted and thus non-scannable by NIS anyway. NIS 2012, Windows XP-SP3. Thanks.
HELP FILES PASSAGE:
When Intelligent Skip Scanning is on, Norton Internet Security does not scan some of the common non-container files types that are available on your disk. The commonly available non-container file that Norton Internet Security skips are .dll, .gif, .png, .jpg, .asf, .avi, .bmp, .htm, .ini, .css, .cur, .fon, .ico, .inf, .sys, .ttf, and .wav.
If a container file appears in a non-container file format Norton Internet Security considers it as a non-container file and skips the file from scanning. However, Norton Internet Security scans all the files that you receive through email even if the Intelligent Skip Scanning option is turned on.
When you turn off the Intelligent Skip Scanning option, Norton Internet Security scans files of all types, regardless of their extension.
But using .jpg files as an example if I right click and scan a folder full of them they all get scanned.
So I guess they are only skipped in scheduled scans and not manual scans.
As for "realtime protection" I don't know how to answer that. I'm sure Norton would protect you and block any infections, but those files are incapable of infecting your system in the first place, at least by themselves.
Thanks. That would seem to solve one of the questions. And your presumption that realtime protection would block any kind of infection, from any filetype, makes sense. This is probably just a situation where the wording in the help files is a little ambiguous/misleading, but it would be nice to know for sure.
Can anyone tell me exactly where the setting for Intelligent Skip Scanning is located. I know I used to see it but now that I am on N360 latest version (20.2.1.22) I can no longer find it. Has it been removed from N360?
