Internet connection drops when I turn on VPN?

When ever I try to use VPN my internet connection fails.

I've had the same problem since installing Norton 360 VPN.  I had both a WIFI and a Ethernet connection.  I just disabled WIFI and it hasn't dropped since.  It was dropping within seconds of being turned on.

Thanks for the response Malthusian; very interesting thread. You clearly know far more about these things than me and seem to have attempted many things to resolve the issue with no success. I have carried out a few of the less complex resolutons you have mentioned and like you no success. Troubleshooter is stating DNS is the problem. I'm not a major user of VPN, but tend to switch it on when I bank etc. My problem is not just the last few days, it happened months ago as well, although back then reconnecting the internet in the simplest possible way always solved the problem, but not this time.

It's definitely a Norton VPN issue as it only happens when I switch on Norton VPN. Norton is running now in normal mode and there are no problems. I've now switched back to classic view in Norton to avoid accidentally switching VPN on. I've only used a VPN since last summer and will resort back to surfing without one until I buy another AV subscription - as you can probably imagine it won't be Norton.

I have wondered whether Norton updates conflict with Windows 10 version 1909. As mentioned in the above thread my laptop won't update to the newer versions of Windows due to a driver conflict.

Dunasnt - read the linked thread below. Work around: if you attempt to use VPN, when internet goes into DNS never never land, to get internet back, run the batch file listed on the thread, then restart. I have internet but still cannot access VPN, any attempt to do so, takes the DNS locator down which cuts the internet off. Norton pushed out a product update with a bug and have not resolved the issue, nor have their “backend” support people called me back with a resolution as promised. https://community.norton.com/en/forums/360-vpn-will-not-connect-norton-log-says-it-did

I tried again and as expected I lost the internet. I turned on VPN, it worked for a few minutes and then disappeared. I then managed to turn off VPN and reconnect to the internet. The Network Status images were as posted above by 'bjm'.

All seemed okay until I opened my browser, the internet was then immediately lost again without connecting to a website. A few minutes later it returned and lasted about a minute before it disappeared agai, this time without me having to do anything. It kept doing this and also each time I tried to connect to a browser it immediately disappeared. It's possible it could be connected to the DNS settings, but Ikjnow nothing about those, so I'm not messing about with them.

At least I have a fix now; I have to uninstall Norton AV and re-install it. Rather ridiculously long-winded and not suitable long-term. I'll simply have to avoid Norton's VPN in the meantime and try another AV software when my subscription expires. However, if it is the settings in my laptop, I'll have the same issue with VPN whichever AV I use.

Yeah, I've had connection issues with Norton Secure VPN.
I may not be able to consistently reproduce as reported here Permalink.

I have a stand-alone not Norton VPN that I prefer... if I use VPN.
I'm not a fan of integrated Norton 360 Norton Secure VPN.  Just me.
And I seldom run my preferred stand-alone not Norton VPN.

Thanks for this. Mine says someting similar under none-VPN circumstances, but with my router instead of the Norton VPN in your images. When I turn Norton VPN on and it then disconnects the internet, I simply get "No internet Available". Try to manually or automatically reconnect and it can't. I'm just stuck with "no Internet Avaiable" and the image of the globe when the internet should be. It shows all available connections when I click on it, but will not connect to any.

I've not checked what the Netwrok Status is when I immediately turn on Norton VPN, it may be similar to above until the point the internet disconnects. As you can probably understand, I'm loathed to test it in case I lose everything

FWIW ~ just received patch updates for Norton 360 - 22.21.2.50.  After several LU runs and two machine Restarts.
@Dunandst

I tested Norton 360 Norton Secure VPN On.  VPN connection was okay.... but, I'm seeing grayed globe.
My machine appears to have net access while Network status reports No internet access.

And now after approx. one minute.  I'm seeing:

Note: I do not normally run Norton 360 Norton Secure VPN.

Thanks for trying.

The laptop is 3.5 years old and had no connectivity issues before. The home connection works on other devices. It also works on the 'problem' laptop without issues until Norton VPN is turned on. So by elimination it has to be a problem with Norton VPN and interacting with this particular laptop, but why it's just become a major issue, 9 months into the subscription, I don't know

If it's malware, I'd have expected Norton to find it, but all was okay during a full scan at the weekend.

I going to run a powerclean later and failing that, I'll have to uninstall Norton and start using another antivirus software.

Dunandst:

I've run a Windows troubleshoot, but it simply answers "no internet connection" and no fix is available as it can't turn it back on. I get the same message 'no internet connection' message in Settings/Network Status. When I go to Norton to try and turn off VPN, it won't let me as the button is greyed out, so it's effectively stuck on (sometimes it's turned itself off and is still greyed out and remains stuck off), so I cant do anything with that either.

The whole system is blocked until I place it on a table, leave it alone and minutes or sometimes hours later, it resolves itself. So I either cannot protect my data with a VPN or cannot use the computer at all. All this happens only when I turn on Norton's VPN. Leave it off and the system works fine.

Yes, I understand.
Other than as posted: "when I've had Norton 360 Norton Secure VPN connection issues.

Sorry....IDK

Thanks for your help

Okay....with my Norton 360 Norton Secure VPN connected - W10 Home - 20H2

Maybe, you're observing a conflict with your Network adapters.

Lets hear from Community

There is no message from Norton and the product other than the VPN works as expected. I've had Norton for about 10 years, but this is the first time I've had VPN (and even that bit worked okay for the first 4/5 months of the present subscription)

Product is Norton 360 Standard on a Windows 10 Home Laptop (version 1909 - it's a Lenovo laptop, so will not update to later Windows due to a well documented conflict with a Conexant Audio driver. Microsoft have blocked updates to all systems with these drivers)

As stated no Norton error message

Steps to reproduce, simply turn on VPN. Problem will recur, either immediately or after a short time (perhaps 10 minutes)

I cannot then reconnect my computer to the router/internet either automatically or manually. To date it always has reconnected (could take hours), but I don't do anything to prompt reconnection. And I dare not turn VPN on again, because one day it may never reconnect

Um, is there a related Norton error message / error code ?

For Norton technical issues please include details for faster assistance from our forum Gurus and contributors:

  • Norton product name and version
  • Operating system
  • Norton error message / error code / screen shot
  • Steps to reproduce issue

Note: DO NOT POST any personal information(email/order details/account ID/Product key/Full name/ address..etc) in public forums posts/comments or share with other forum customers.

Same here. First time was a number of months ago, it did it a few times. Then it worked fine for ages, but now it happens every time. The internet drops and simply shows the globe; "No Internet available". You can't reconnect either, it simply won't allow you to, it stays on "No Internet Available".

Restarting the computer doesn't help either. I've reinstalled Norton 360 twice, using the removal tool, but nothing helps. Eventually after an hour or two, it just starts working again, but as soon as you reconnect Norton VPN, the internet disappears.

I have been using the same router for about 18 months now, so nothing has changed. The last time my computer wouldn't even recognised my router and I had to re-enter the password, it now has 2 wi-fi identifiers for my one router, numbered 1 and 2. I daren't use the VPN again for fear of losing he internet and computer completely.

What is going on?
