Hi folks & greetings from the UK.

I have recently been getting an unusual icon in my Network connection box.

When I go into Control panel / LAN or Highspeed connection I normally have the usual icons showing my connection including Wireless internet connection which I have disconnected.

Recently, however, I have been getting another line/box above these icons showing the icon of a PC entitled Internet Gateway. If I click on this I get another box with properties etc. and an icon under Activity  showing little pc's & the atlas entitled Internet-Internet Gateway-My Computer.

If I click on Properties within this Activity box it says "This connection allows you to connect to the internet through a shared connection on another computer"

It shows packets received and sent, and has a disconnect button, although when I click on it nothing happens.

What I tend to do is switch off at my router wait a few seconds and then start it again. Currently, whilst I'm writing this I'm not going through this 'Gateway'. Sometimes when it connects to the Gateway  'Network connection' will come up at the bottom of the screen but not always. I have no evidence of problems or cloning. If I go into Windows Task Manager while the Gateway icon is present I am still  the only user.

I am using windows XP.

I did a quick scan yesterday which showed one issue which Norton resolved.

The 'Gateway' icon has appeared since the scan.

Am I at risk? Is it a problem? Is it maybe my Internet provider just directing me through a different service?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for the info. Reece. I have got 1394 connection but it's disabled. The gateway is running at the moment and I've clicked on it but there's no obvious way to delete it.

Can you advise on that or/and tell me if this gateway connection is a problem ie security threat ?

It's been a long time since I've deleted one of these gateways and unfortunately I don't recall the steps although I don't recall it being particularly complicated. Maybe right-clicking on it and choosing disable? If you see anything about bridging, that's what you want to remove/disable.

I haven't given the threat space much thought so I'm not sure what issues there may be.  We have tested our products with these bridges and you are protected in that sense.

Thanks again. There's no ability to right click & delete and no reference to bridging. It's a Home computer and no other machines are in the house.

A long time ago I did try and set up a network with another machine at home but without success and the connection has long been disabled.

Anybody else have any ideas please?

Thanks.

Do you mean it is XP Home ?

On my XP Pro you can Right Mouse Click and get Disable although you may have to F5 to refresh the display.

Check in Control Panel / Network Connections in case it behaves differently.

Do you use any Firewire connections? If not go into Device Manager (WINKEY + Pause / Hardware / Device manager button) and disable the Firewire connection there?

I know  XP Home has some networking differences but I thought they only affected things like Domains.

Let me know if you are still stuck -- I know a man who knows .... <g>

Thanks huwyngr. Yep, still stuck !! My OS is just standard 'XP'

I don't use Firewire.

I followed your instructions to device manager and in network adapters the only 2 items that haven't got a red cross through them (ie disconnected?)are marked 'VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet adapter' and 'Voyager remote USB' (which is the router I'm using to connect).

If I click on the Gateway connection in 'Network connections' it gives me the option to disconnect but doing this has no affect on the Gateway icon?

Any more info.?

Thanks

Now that you know it comes from something you have onboard and if it is causing you no harm I would leave it as it is. More damage is done by trying to clean up things that Windows does for which we don't know the reason than by leaving them alone.

FWIW My 1394 controller has its own entry in Device Manager: IEEE 1394 bus host controller.

Click on that and it shows the device used -- TI in my case and then Double Click to get Properties for that line and on the General TAB at the bottom is a drop list that reads Device Useage and probably says Use this device (enable)

This is common on WinXP machines, especially those that have firewire/1394 connections. I don’t know what triggers Windows setting up this Gateway but I’ve been pretty successful at simply deleting it and not having it come back.
