Has anyone else been caught up in a scam that started out as an auto-renewal of Norton LifeLock for 3 years for $299? Apparently it was included with my Xfinity plan (internet, TV, voice) but expired on Jan. 1st. The initial email said they had automatically renewed LifeLock but I could request a refund by calling a certain phone # following the steps. "If you don't wish to Renew or pay $299.00, Please Follow the Steps below to Cancel your subscription/for a Refund. Call our billing at 810-377-5777 we will gladly assist you with Canceling your service."
I thought the person who returned my call from that number was trying to help me, but he was a scammer. He had me download some malware that allowed him to take control of my screen and keyboard. After some other steps he removed $10,000 from one of my credit cards and deposited it into my checking account, which is where a refund would have gone, since that is the account I paid my Xfinity bill from. He asked me to type in $100, but he added 2 zeros. Then he said that as a result of "my" error, I would have to got out and purchase as many gift cards as I could from big box stores like Target, CVS, Best Buy. As a result of the scam, I was coerced into purchasing $5,000 worth of gift cards.
