Internet security caused blue screen crashes

My laptop running vista started blue screening after a couple of minutes of use. During start up I was getting messages that I had turned off my virus and laptop was vulnerable. Was able to start in safe mode. Have carried out scans of the laptop with no errors found. Then using a maintenance package in windows I was informed that some drivers were missing from Norton. Norton also said that it could fix itself. I tried this but to no avail. So I uninstalled Norton Internet Security, started laptop and all was well, no blue screen, used laptop for about an hour and was fine. So I reinstalled Norton, re booted PC and it worked OK. except that Norton informed me that it needed updates, so I down loaded them, and installed. Rebooted and low and behold BLUE SCREEN again. ARRRRGH! I have uninstalled and laptop running fine. Is there an issue with the latest download with Vista. Please help, as I am currently not secure from a virus attack.

All is fine on my desktop so no issue with lastes download there. (Windows 7, 64bit)

Exact same problem for me on Window Vista 32-bit OS as Papafixit.  HP Pavillion Laptop,  Happened after update I beleive.  Went through same process of uninstalling and reinstalling.  Had to do a restore (recommended) to get past Blue Screen, but that could have exacerbated the issue.  Not sure.  Anyway, I have NIS uninstalled and my system has returned to stability.  Noticed that updates were not working either and Norton was warning that my system was unprotected, but nothing I could do to fix it.  Went to safe mode and did virus scan (nothing) and maleware scan with MalewareBytes (nothing). Used NPE (nothing).  It is not a virus or maleware as far as ony of my software can determine.

I have been sitting in a "Live" Chat all afternoon with the only advise of going to see Nathan, the virtual expert, which is a frustrating experience in itself.  Here, in the forum, I am noticing later-posted issues getting resolved ahead of this, seemingly more critical one.  Can't wait any longer.  This issue has cost me two-days of complete down time.

I have uninstalled everything Norton or Symantic from my computer.  I am hence installing BitDefender Internet Security 2013, as they are offering two years for the price of one.  I'll give this ago from here, leaving two months of my subscription on the table.  They are very highly rated for Customer Service.

Cheers

I still have another year to run on a two year deal. It is just that it works on my desk top OK, so must be a clash with Vista I am thinking. Hope you r move to another product goes OK.

Can you please provide your exact product version an OS details?

I have had this happen on three computers since yesterday.  Two Windows 7 with SP1 and one with Windows XP SP3. Computer Blue Screens and restarts.  Removed all of Symantec's products and everything works.  Reinstalled Symantec Endpoint Protection version 11 just fine.  Run the updates and Blue Screen.  I have also lost two days of work dealing with these.

What are the details of the Blue Screens? What driver or file is referenced as being the problem?

I had the exact same problems over the last 48 hours with Norton AV 2011 and vista. It now seems to have been fixed by Norton Power Eraser. I haven't yet run LiveUpdate (don't feel like risking it at the moment).

To XP / Vista / Win 7 users who have experienced a blue screen of death (BSOD):

There is a free utility from Nirsoft's called BlueScreenView that can be used to interpret the Bug Check (BC) codes in your Windows dump files.  Try the following (immediately after a BSOD if possible):

1.  Download BlueScreenView here
2.  Unzip the downloaded file (no installation required) and double-click BlueScreenView.exe to run
3.  When scan is completed, go to Edit | Select All
4.  Go to File | Save Selected Items and save the report as a text file named BSOD.txt
5.  Attach BSOD.txt to your post (see here for instructions)

I'm not a tech expert but someone else in the forum might be able to point you in the right direction if they can see details from the dump files associated with your BSOD errors.

----------
Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP2 * NIS 2013 v. 20.2.0.19 * IE 9.0 * Firefox 18.0
HP Pavilion dv6835ca, Intel Core2Duo CPU T5550 @ 1.83 GHz, 3.0 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS

Please see a simllar post about blue screens I made in http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/NAVENG-SYS-causes-blue-screen/m-p/895297/highlight/false.

No one in this thread has cited the specific bug check code. After a blue screen, reboot in safe mode, then start Administrative Tools>Event Viewer.  In the System events, look for one called "Save Dump" and open it. You can copy and paste the text in the dialog:

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x0000001a (0x00041785, 0xc0e00000, 0x82e65ff0, 0x00000000). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini011913-01.dmp.

You get this in the output from BlueScreenView as explained in a previous message. Sample file output is shown below. Not only do you get the bug check code, but more importantly, you also get  the driver causing the crash which in my case is NAVENG.SYS, which is the "smoking gun". (If you see a driver for some other vendor, then it is probably not an NIS problem.)

Thanks and Regards,

I was able to solve the BSOD issue (Vista 32-bit & Norton Internet Security 2012 and LiveUpdate problem ) by following the following steps:

  1. Un-Installed NIS & re-booted
  2. Downloaded & installed Norton 360 Trial Version (30 day) (I have another 4 months subscription that I plan to convert / upgrade)
  3. Downloaded & ran NPE (Norton Power Eraser)
  4. Rebooted & Ran LiveUpdate

System works fine now running Norton 360.
