Long time user, first time poster...... I just like to start off by saying, hello all !
I am using NIS 2009 on my "main" laptop, and my "backup" laptop doesn't have any kind of security on it at all, I am wanting to upgrade to NIS 2011 on my "main" laptop and put the '09' version on my "backup" laptop. My subscription for NIS 2009 still has 536 days left on it, if I install it on my "backup" laptop and use my Product Key for the '09' version, will it still have the 536 days left? Also, will I be able to use the Product Key (NIS 2009) with 536 days for the NIS 2011 version on my "main" laptop?
Best way forward is to update your main laptop from NIS2009 to NIS2011 (for free) by downloading and installing it from this link. The 09 product key will activate 2011.
I bought the NIS2011 at Walmart, I didn't notice before but the NIS2011 is for 3 PC's, so I'm going to go ahead and use it on my backup laptop also. I was just wandering if the balance of my NIS2009 subscription (535 days) would carry over to my NIS2011 subscription, or would it start over at 366 days?

Maybe I can help. If you have a NIS 2009 subscription for one PC then that subscription continues for the remaining days no matter whether you continue to run NIS 2009 or update it to NIS 2010 or NIS 2011.
Just remember if you have any subscription for more than one PC, i.e. 3 PC, then the subscription starts counting down from the day that you first install the subscription on the 1st PC. So if you have a two year license, 730 days, but do not install the subscription on the 2nd PC until the beginning of the 2nd yr, the 2nd PC will have just the same number of remaining days as all the other PC(s) on which this subscription is installed i.e. 365..
If you use the Product Key from NIS 2011 on your backup laptop you will lose the 535 days remaining because those days are tied to the old Product Key that you are replacing. You should, however, be able to have Customer Support add back those days. You could uninstall NIS 2009 and replace it with NIS 2011, but activate it using the old Product Key which will then continue to give you 535 days with the new version. The old Product Key will work on the new program. However, if you go through Customer Support you can probably manage to get that extra year benefit by using the new Key and having them add your remaining days to it. I would check with Support first and find out the best approach to take.
Your NIS 2009 could also be a 3 user license. Check your Norton Account and it will tell you if you have any remaining activations allowed for that key.
1, Please check your Norton account at www.mynortonaccount.com and see if your NIS 2009 subscription is for 1 pc or 3 pc's. If it is for 3 pc's, it will tell you how many activations you have left. Please also make note of the product key that you find there. If it shows that you have a 3 pc subscription, then you can update for free to NIS 2011 on both computers. If you use that key for both computers, then you will still have all those days remaining.
2. You can just save the new NIS 2011 that you just bought if your account shows that the 2009 subscription is for 3 computers. If the subscription from 2009 is for just the one computer, then I would contact customer support and ask them to add back the days to your new subscription with the new key. You can then use the link that mdturner provided to install it on both computers.
You can contact customer support by using the free chat program. Here is the link for that.
This is the link for US/Can. If you need a different location, please consult your local Symantec site for the local free chat customer support link.
3. Another question is about your backup computer which you said had no security program on it. Has that computer been on the net without any security? If it has, it is possible that computer may have malware on it that may prevent the proper installation of NIS 2011. What operating system and service pack is on that computer and is it 32 or 64 bit please.?
Please come back and let us know how you made out. Thanks.
The backup PC has Windows XP SP2, as for my main PC it has Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit. I have NIS2011 installed on my backup and it is running great, I done a full system scan and found a few problems and took care of them, but its working great. I have NIS2011 on my main laptop and it's working great. I got all the days that remained from my NIS2009 subscription on both PC's....and i'm a HAPPY CAMPER.

thanks everyone for your reply's and help
HI raven_87
Since your backup PC is still at SP2 it should be updated to SP3 in order to continue to receive Micrsoft Security updates which are an essential part of your PC's defenses against malware.
