Today, many users are vulnerable to threats that leverage AI. These include sophisticated deepfakes, AI-powered scams, and adversarial attacks designed to evade AI-driven security. AI-generated voice and audio scams aim to create scams with fake but realistic audio to trick users into giving up money or personal data.
Some of the common AI-generated voice scams include:
· Deepfake : Cybercriminals may use AI algorithms to create fake voices that resemble real voices in videos and other audio files.
· Impersonation : Cybercriminals may use AI-powered tools to mimic real voices in live conversations to trick victims into sharing their personal data or confidential information.
· Crypto Scams : Cybercriminals may hack popular social media accounts and use them to stream fake events, such as cryptocurrency offers with AI-generated deepfakes of famous people. Instead of receiving any crypto, victims end up giving their own money to the scammers.
The Deepfake Protection feature in the Norton device security app uses a built-in AI tool to protect you from investment scams, crypto scams, and giveaway scams. It runs on your device to analyze and detect synthetic voices while you watch a video or listen to audio, and notifies you of the same.
Important points to know:
-
You must turn on the audio settings on your device to allow your Norton device security app to detect synthetic voices in videos or other audio files.
-
Currently, Deepfake Protection only detects scams in English language audio files.
-
The feature can work automatically for YouTube videos. To detect synthetic voices on other video or audio apps, you must complete a manual check using the Start manual audio scan option in your Norton device security app settings.
-
For now, this feature works only on Windows, which requires a Copilot+ compatible PC using Qualcomm Snapdragon X chips.
-
This feature is available only for select cohorts.
