I just installed Internet Security 2010 on Xp from a CD. It twice said it was removing Norton products and twice rebooted. After completion, I called on the NIS icon. Instead of the familiar screen that allows selection of update schedules, setting security levels, etc, I got the online help screen. I looked in Windows Explorer for the correct executable file; there were 20 new files, but none appeared to be what I was looking for. I went back to the help screen, sent this question, and followed up with a chat request. The tech asked for permission to take over my machine and run an update. I told her that I had just done so by picking live update from the all programs list and gotten a ‘nothing to update’ response. I also said that I was reluctant to turn over control because of a painful experience with Norton Help last year involving 14 hours over 2 days wherein techs in the Phillipines and India twice crashed my machine and subsequently were unavailable or unable to recover even in safe mode. Were it not for Norton GoBack, I would have been unable to recover. I ultimately fixed the problem myself. She gave me a link to a Symantec website to fetch a file that might help. When I tried, I found that NIS had disabled my Foxfire and Internet Explorer. I could message her through Norton Help, but no other access worked. I said that I would sign off and try again, and if necessary disable Norton. Ultimately, I had to GoBack to pre installation. I then received a call from support and after much discussion was informed that if I didn’t wipe out the entirety of my Norton Systemworks, NIS would not work. GoBack is the best thing Norton ever did for me! He said if I wanted the equivalent of Goback I had to buy Norton 360. I have read much good about NIS 2010, but not so much about 360. I said, “ Do you mean that I just wasted $70 on one Symantec product, and the cure is to spend another $80 on a Symantec product that I have little confidence in? No answer.
Is he correct? Should I be considering another product altogether?
