Is it safe to disable antivirus protection to install Western Digital firmware updates?

I have several Western Digital Passport USB drives. WD recently came out with a firmware upgrade. The instructions for installation specify (among other things): All AntiVirus software MUST be disabled. All Anti-Spyware software MUST be disabled. An internet connection is required to install the firmware update. This gets me very nervous. All protections turned off while still connected to the internet? I am wondering what others think of this. I have seen instructions like this with a few software products. I’ve always ignored it and kept NAV running. However, I’m a bit more concerned when doing firmware upgrades than software upgrades.
