I want to use the Norton VPN service
from a NAS server without the Norton VPN client.
Is the VPN server and configuration information
for this use case documented somewhere?
@Warwick_Burrows There isn’t any related documentation for what you are trying to accomplish. VPN’s are client-side software not server side. I found this AI generated information:
AI Overview
You can’t directly install Norton VPN on a NAS device, as Norton VPN is a client-side application, not a server software. Instead, you’d install it on a device (like a computer, phone, or tablet) that connects to your network, and then configure your NAS to use that VPN connection.
Here’s a breakdown of how to approach this:
- Understanding the Limitations:
- Norton VPN is a client: Norton VPN is designed to be installed on individual devices (like your computer, phone, or tablet) to encrypt your internet traffic.
- NAS is a storage device: Your NAS (Network Attached Storage) primarily functions as a storage device, not a VPN server.
- No direct installation: You can’t install Norton VPN software directly on your NAS.
- Setting up VPN for your NAS:
- Install Norton VPN on a device:
Install Norton VPN on a device (like a computer) that is connected to the same network as your NAS.
Configure your NAS to use the VPN connection:
- Router VPN: The most common method is to configure your router to use the VPN connection from the device running Norton VPN.
- Manual VPN setup: Some NAS devices allow you to manually configure VPN connections. Check your NAS’s documentation for specific instructions.
Examples of VPN setup for NAS:
- Synology NAS: Synology NAS devices have built-in VPN client functionality. You can find detailed instructions on how to set up a VPN connection in the Synology documentation.
- Qnap NAS: QNAP also has VPN client functionality. Refer to your QNAP documentation for instructions.
Alternative VPN providers:
If you’re not using Norton VPN, other VPN providers might offer NAS-compatible solutions or instructions.
- Key Considerations:
- VPN client vs. VPN server:
Understand the difference between a VPN client (like Norton VPN) and a VPN server.
- Network security:
Ensure your NAS traffic is routed through the VPN connection for enhanced security.
- NAS documentation:
Consult your NAS device’s documentation for specific instructions on VPN setup.
You may install the Norton VPN on your router per this article:

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately the link at the end to setup a VPN on a router seems to be a generalised article by Norton and doesn’t actually reference how to do it with the Norton VPN. Norton provides a VPN client on a PC or other device, but doesn’t seem to offer an OpenVPN client interface to the VPN servers like other VPN providers do. I’ve stopped using Norton VPN and replaced it with a VPN service that does offer integration with NAS and routers rather than just personal devices.
Thanks for the post back. Routers have to be capable of running a VPN internally else attempts to run one internally are futile. Glad you have a solution.

Absolutely right. My NAS has a built in OpenVPN client for the networking so I get the VPN server connection details from my VPN service provider and used those. Thanks.
