Is there some way to overwrite old online back up files with newer versions of the same files?

All my backup files are documents that are updated regularly.  I don't need separate space for each backup.  Is there a way to overwrite or delete and replace, preferably automatically?

Hi tomat6362

If you try a new test back up set with a small amount of documents add, delete, modify and no change to the text, a few times backing up after each change then see what you get?

Hi Andmike

From what I’ve read the back up process occurs as you say, I was surprised to find out this information about backup files click here.

Hi intesec.

You are right in that wwelty's post does appear to indicate I am wrong.  I had either forgotten or not read the post before.  Two things strike me, the first being that his web link does not seem to work and the second is that I do not see how a Norton web page is going to give access to data held by me on a stand alone drive.  And because of the first I cannot check the second... :-(

However such access may well be possible for online backups.  If I can find out any more I will post it here.

Hi intesec,

The post I made is still correct. Each online backup performed is retained as part of the incremental technology it uses. The only way to do as you describe is to create a new backup set each time. The other way is to manually purge content. Neither of which are conducive to time management and defeats one of the main purposes of using the online backup. That being data retention to older copies of the data.

The website, specific for Norton 360, will give access to download only individual files. You can access the older sets by going under Options in the Download File view and select a different date. Restoring an entire older set, specifically via the web, does require Norton Online Backup as well though. Let me know if you need anything further.

Thanks for the update wwelty.

I would just add that the link in the old post (https://n360.backup.com) still does not work for me.  However doing a search on n360backup.com gets me to Norton Online Backup which I assume is what you will need to go to now.  Good luck.

This looks like a real advantage of using the online backup against local backup.

Hi Wesley

Thanks for posting its always appreciated.

I can see why the URL isn't working. It should be: n360.backup.com.

Two critical items to note for Norton 360 users:

  • The web interface will allow single file downloads only unless you also have a Norton Online Backup subscription.
  • At no time can Norton 360 data be purged/deleted via the web interface. Norton 360 handles all of its data management via it's installed client.

Hope this helps out.
