Issues with external hard drive back up

I was wondering if soemone can help?

I have had Norton for many years even recommended it to family etc. Recently I had a corrupt hard drive and bought a new one without any hesitations presuming that I could just do a "restore files". I received great help to retrieve information stored on my external hard drive (as the Norton online backup was not big enough). The problem I have is that all the extension files *.sbc* are not on my external hard drive, the folders that were created to hold the files are there but not one single extension file.

The reason this is an issue is that the program these extension files came from were from Microsoft Office Accounting 2009 and this help all my business accounts from 2009. You can understand my frustration and disappointed with regards to what Norton can save or what it can't save.

I have had interaction with Norton helpdesk and they have used the remote system to access my external hard drive but they said that there is nothing there? However they have found some backed up information from Aug 2011.

Is there certain files that Norton do not back up and is there anyway of retrieving these missing files? My hard drive failed and I have been to see if it can be saved, I was informed that there are no guarantees, but they could try and again a "big but" it would also cost in excess of £400 which I certainly do not have to throw away if nothing is retrieved.  In the meantime I have also contacted the software company to see if there have been any changes to the software that may have had an effect to how the files are saved.

.

Your help in this is greatly appreciated.

How badly was the hard drive corrupted? Was it totally unreadable on the computer, or did Windows just stop responding.

If you connect it to your computer, can you see anything?

Hi,

Im not an IT specialist but there was nothing when I turned on the computer.  I then transfered the hard drive (HD) into an enclosure and handed it to a computer replair place and they said that something that spins inside no longer works and they would have to open the HD in a special environment (sealed room) and it would cost £400 or there abouts.

That's not good.

Have you set your Windows Explorer to display hidden files? Open Windows Explorer. If you do not see the toolbar, hit the 'Alt' key. Click on Tools - Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure Show hidden filed, folders and drives is selected. Click OK.

Now look in your folders on the external drive to see if there is anything there.
