I bought the three pack of 360 V2. Installed it on one machine that was running NIS 2007. Machine was old pentium running XP Pro with SP2 with a LinkSys 54G wireless connection. Ran the install and could not connect to the internet. Uninstalled reinstalled and was able to connect until the first Live Update. This update required a reboot. Once I rebooted I was unable to connect to the internet. Uninstalled and tried again. Finally located the Norton Removal Tool and ran that, reinstalled and was able to connect to the internet.
Now on to the second computer. This is a Thinkpad T41 running XP Pro SP2 with an internal 11 a/b/g wireless adapter. Same issue as with the previous, Again ran the Norton Removal Tool and reinstalled. Same problem except I could never connect to the internet over wireless. Several more reboots, uninstalls, reinstalls and no resolution. After a lot of poking and prodding I found that if I disabled a service on the adapter named "Symantec Network Security Intermediate Filter Driver" I was now able to access the internet. Did my liveUpdate and reenabled the driver. Back to no wireless internet access. Ok, with various machines I've had over the years at work I found that the sequence of install of services for the adapter was sometimes problematic. So I uninstalled the ThinVantage Acess Connection and the driver Adapter(did this in safe mode). Upon reboot Windows "discovered" new hardware and I reinstalled the driver and the Access Connections software. Still no fix. I have tried every combination of uninstall and reinstall that I thought possible. No success.Went to the Symantec online chat and the net of that was to go into the Firewall settings and chane Iexplorer and System to allowed. There was no System entry. End of discussion. Nothing resolved.
Ok, lets really screw things up. Finally bit the bullet on XP SP3. Same issues. Uninstalled and reinstalled 360, still the same probleml Found the Symantec Registry Repair Tool and ran that. Response was that there were no registry entries found. Now I'm back to disabling the "Symantec Network Security Intermediate Filter Driver" service. Any time there is a liveUpdate which requires a reboot (some core service has been updated) I get into the same situation and have to go back and disable the service. Before I go buy some other security suite are there any suggestions, magic incantations, or sequence of gymnastic moves which must be performed that might help resolve this isse?
Optimistically yours,
Bill
I think we should look to why there is a connection problem rather than trying to disable the "filter"
So today is Sepy 1 and I’ve jus noticed that the Intermediate Filter Driver has been re-associated with my connection (probably during LiveUpdate) and the connection remains functional. So what happened? And what does the driver do?
Alas I do not know the answer to your questions. However, if there are problems we should try to resolve them unless an absolute link to the filter can be demonstrated.
How did you unistall SymIM_P.inf ? Also, did the internet work OK after rebooting from that point on ?
The driver acts as a median, seperating your computer from the internet. Like the grass inbetween Southbound and Northbound on a highway.
If the connection is still functional , well problem solved.
Just installed NAV2008 and couldn’t connect afterwards (via a networked cable co. modem). Discovered the Intermediate Filter Driver and uninstalled it then rebooted and was able to connect. So the fix is a workaround until I find out what the heck this driver does besides disabling my connection. The driver inf can be found in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SymNetDrv\SymIM_P.inf and can be reinstalled via the network connection properties/drivers .etc. I am not running the Norton Firewall. If anybody finds out what this driver does and what the implication are if it’s not installed please post. Thanks.
