Woody Leonhard posted two articles yesterday on InfoWorld regarding Windows updates released 07-Mar-2017 (the "First Tuesday" for non-security patches) that might be of interest.
The article Mysterious WPD driver is installing on Windows PCs, triggering errors warns users about a driver update for Windows Portable Devices (WPD) that is causing an error 0x800f0217 on some systems. The WPD platform "is a driver technology that supports many portable devices such as mobile phones, digital cameras, and portable media players" and enables a computer to communicate with attached media and storage devices that use protocols like Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP), Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) as well as Mass Storage Class (MSC) devices. The article only mentions Win 10 but the WPD platform is also supported on older Windows operating systems.
For Win 7 and Win 8.1 users, the article Windows snooping patches KB 2952664, KB 2976978 are back (again) describes the re-release of a so-called "snooping" patch that triggers a task called DoScheduledTelemetryRun. According to Microsoft there is no GWX or upgrade functionality contained in this update and it should only collect telemetry if the user is enrolled in the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP), but some advanced users posting on AskWoody.com found that earlier versions of this update triggered the DoScheduledTelemetryRun task even when CEIP was disabled.
