Remember a few days ago LiveUpdates were failing for many of us for both Norton Internet Security and Norton 360. Symantec fixed the problem, and now everyday, the LiveUpdates have been LARGE, definitely larger than usual. I find, like every 16 or so hours, a LiveUpdate session gives ~9 to 11 MB, EVERYDAY. Sizes used to be only about 3 or 4 MB per day.
... By manually clicking on the Run LiveUpdate link on the front NIS interface. Notification information then is displayed, the second line showing the size of total updates for the current LiveUpdate session.

What version ID of NIS are you running? I'm running 19.5.0.145 and the only thing that happens if I click on the Run LiveUpdate Link on the main GUI is that it runs the Liveupdate. If there are files to download I see the size during the download but not otherwise. I don't see a second line with a total for all the updates.
Is that what you mean?

If you click on "Live Update" the size of the update displays on the line that say "Download updates." Usually it flashes by so quick unless a. the file size is huge or b. your connection is slow.

(How do you unhighlight a message after you highlight it? I wanted to copy the message and then paste, NOT keep the whole message a different color.)
Yes, that is what I see (referring to the second line showing size of currently downloading liveupdates).
The LiveUpdate interface shows these three separate lines:
- Checking For Updates - indicates progress in this operation.
- Downloading Updates - shows the total size of all expected set of updates and indicates amount of download progress.
- Processing Updates - Shows how many items of the set are being installed, and then these numbers not displaying during further processing; occasionally an update will fail to be installed and a failure notice is shown after finishing this process session.
[NIS 2011, version 18.7...]
gcc
OK that's what I see during a download but I thought you were saying that you saw figures in say a popup or if you right mouse clicked on the LiveUpdate link.
Multiple downloads like that often mean an incomplete or corrupted install and one thing to try is a reinstall after uninstalling and cleaning up. The simplest way would be the newer Norton Remove & Reninstall Tool:
Here is a link to the new Norton Remove & Reinstall tool that, like the older Norton Removal Tool removes most Norton Products from your system, but the newer tool uninstalls the Norton products from your computer and reinstalls the latest version of your Norton security product.
If you already have the latest version of Norton AntiVirus, Norton Internet Security, or Norton 360, the Norton Remove & Reinstall tool reinstalls the same version of the Norton security product on your computer.
Note that it does not reinstall other Norton products you may have installed -- that you have to do manually and we can point you to the download point for the current versions.
You may pefer to wait on to see what others suggest ....
Please let us know how you get on or if you have any queries ....
Last LiveUpdate was done 17 hours ago. Trying a new LiveUpdate session, NOW.
251.64 MB total size downloading, for 5 items.
Maybe the large sizes I have been finding are normal, but this is now late Saturday
for this current smaller size. Note, the larger sized LiveUpdates were happening both on my copy of Norton Internet Security and on Norton 360, each on SEPARATE computers.
My update size is rarely more than 1-2mb large. Let the large files download and see will the size shrink in the future.
Perhaps you are getting the latest 19.5 patch/fix.

Nope. NIS version 18.7 (year issue 2011) on the Windows XP machine. Also, some big download LiveUpdates still happening with Norton 360 version 5.2.0.13 on the Windows Vista machine.
gcc,
Just a thought at least for your NIS 18. Look under Settings / Computer and disable the Automatic Download of New Version if that exists in NIS 2011 since it will be downloading 2012 files but should then ask if you want to install them; it does not do it without your OK.
This only does the the major upgrades like from 2011 to 2012 and not the intermediary ones within a major release.
If it exists on 2011 then that would explain the regular downloads of that size.
On N360 V5 I don't know since that is the current version. But you might look at its settings also.
Hugh,
I did what you suggested. I found the item about automatic downloading newest version in Miscellaneous Settings. I'll watch how the size of updates are in these next few days.
Today being Sunday, 15 hours since last liveupdates. Run LiveUpdate NOW: 906 kb, 5 specific update items installed. This must be normal for a weekend day. ( I ran this LiveUpdate before I changed the automatic newest version setting.)
Look forward to more in the next day or so.
If it is continually downloading the version upgrade despite you saying No (or whatever options it gives) then that needs to be looked at by Norton.
No known indications or messages about NIS version upgrades have occurred since installing NIS 2011 several months ago. The liveupdates and the automatic liveupdates generally happen without problems, except for the occasional update definitions install failures (note carefully, "occasional"). I do NOT have any higher version of Norton on the old Windows XP machine than version 18.7.0.13.
This one might be too soon, but 6 hours ago last liveupdate. 480.78 kb download LiveUpdates NOW.
Processed 5 updates.
9.12 MB LiveUpdates after 23 hours since last session of LiveUpdates.
11 update items.
