Latest live update causes Youtube now to ask for a Sign In

Hello, for years I’ve been able to access Youtube songs or various car fix up topics (and anything else) with the VPN on (I always have it on).

Today, Norton did an Update and when I went to Youtube and asked for a song (and anything else) and up pops a black box asking me to “Sign in to confirm you’re not a bot”.

They seem to want my email address or a Google password. I do not have any Google password (I don’t use Google Mail or any other Google service.

Thanks for any ideas! I am using Norton 360 Deluxe including VPN. I will try to get the version number when I can remember how to do it .I’ll be back … Robert.

VPN’s do not block anything. What may happen is that many web sites do not allow access from known VPN IP addresses. They do this for copyright, legal, security, and political reasons. There is nothing a VPN provider can or should do to circumvent these legal protections. See this How to Geeks article. https://www.howtogeek.com/403771/why-do-some-websites-block-vpns/

It may be coincidental that the YouTube pages you have been able to access have updated their list of VPN IP’s that they block.

Did you ever set up an account for YouTube? With all due respect, you do know that that is a Google company?

I don’t know, every time I complain here, I am to blame. I’ve been using Youtube (not for streaming ever) I have watched their ads between songs or user-made how-too fix car problems.

Forever, I say Forever, on my computer, always with Norton 360 VPN… no black screen stopping me in my tracks …Just after Norton had done an automatic update…Now it is pushing me to join or give them my email address. Is there any possible relation here at all?

I also have gotten an automatic window pop up (since the update) telling me that Norton has deleted unused trash from old Internet Explorer !! (how cockeyed is that) ? and it has also cleaned up Windows trash, which I absolutely never asked for…

With all due respect, I have known that Youtube is a Google company and have never had to set up an account for Youtube. I also know that Google is one of the most intrusive companies, and is currently being sued for that… That is my opinion on this.

I also feel that the brand of browser makes a difference in experience. My Firefox never puts up a Norton ad page about needing all the Norton ad ons. My Edge browser puts a Norton page up every time.

Best Wishes, Robert.

I’m sorry if that is how you feel about my reply. I certainly was not blaming you for anything. When a user presents a problem we have to ask many questions as we cannot see or interact with your system to diagnose the issue.

Something you may try to help with the diagnosis is try accessing the YouTube pages again with the VPN turned off. This might help if using the VPN is causal in your current issue.

Hello Robert_100, I only joined Norton to reply to you - yes, they made me join even though I don’t have Norton or even a computer at this time.

I have had the same frustrations with YouTube pretending I am a bot (that can get around pretty well for a bot - I’m sure they monitor all activity).

I have only an iPhone. Period. I too am routinely asked to log into YouTube though I don’t & have never abused the songs I use to be able to listen to without seeing a black box. On the phone, I can listen to a teacher or a song by clicking on the heading beneath the red & white arrow in the center of the YouTube video that starts the listening. I use duck duck go instead of safari but I’m not sure if it factors in or not. I am able to listen if I pretend I’m logging in (go to the google login page then get out).

I feel it’s totally invasive & our society has deteriorated from the common misconception at the beginning of our tech explosion (“he who has the most toys when he dies wins” …blah, blah, blah) to the current misconception of “he who has the most data when he dies wins.” Well, he wins in that he sells our data & makes money.

Toys, data, there is no win in any of it when you’re dead! Money can’t & never will make us happy. We never know when our number will be up & I’ve seen too many people’s last wishes carried out under the provisions of the executor instead of the deceased.

For that reason alone, I gave away everything of value that I owned to those I wanted to have it. Can’t take it with you, right? Off subject! Sorry!

Hope you can find a way like I did to trick YouTube into thinking you logged in so you can listen to what you like.

Hello 3810, I’m sure that you and I are having these new feelings about being unhappy with the internet. But, from what I have been reading, this rejection from Youtube …is not that they hate us, but they are trying to protect users from us “bad guys” using tricky old VPNs…To steal data …

I am starting to see a few websites doing the same. Last night I was using the Startpage web search (which was also wide open and free), Now, they are putting up a scrambled code which you have to put in manually to use Startpage.

I am getting used to turning the VPN off for Youtube, which makes it work properly. Now, I will be using Startpage less. I have always used DuckduckGo , and so far it has not complained…

There are also other popular websites I have used that now reject you from going on with the VPN. (I forget the names)

Pain in neck ,computing is now. We gotta get used to it. Unless some software can find a way to get it done automatically !!

Hang in there. Good luck , Bob …
