Latest NIS slows email retrieval to a crawl

Just allowed Symantec to install the latest version of NIS (20.1.1.2). I manage 17 email accounts in Outlook 2012, and have never had an issue between NIS and Outlook. Retrieving all mail from all accounts previously took between 5 and 20 seconds depending on time between retrievals (number of incoming). With new version of NIS, it's taking between 30 seconds to 2 minutes, and sometimes will not finish at all; Send/Receive has to be cancelled. The first two or three accounts goes quickly and then Outlook slows to a veritable crawl.

If I disable email scanning (virus and spam), Send/Receive goes back to 5 to 10 seconds. Re-enabling NIS: again 2 minutes.

Anyone else experiencing this issue?

Thanks for any help/suggestions.

Updating my own message...

I did not mean Outlook 2012 - I meant to type 2010.

Also, just noticed that in other messages that ports could be an issue. All accounts use port 110 incoming.

Lastly, noticed that if I retrieve a single account at a time (as opposed to doing a Send/Receive ALL) there is no appreciable delay. Obviously, though, this is not an acceptable solution. I have also seen a lot of suggestions for simply disabling the Norton email add-in. This is not really acceptable either. I would need to re-enable spam filtering at the email server(s) which would require that I login to each website client to ensure that I don't have misdirected legitimate mail in spam folders. That many email accounts = way too much time managing spam. Likewise, I've not experienced any problem with the NIS email scanner previously, so it seems wasteful to have to invest in a third party antispam solution.

I'd really like to just get the new NIS to work as well as the old NIS...   :-\

*Second Update*

I've discovered that the problem is NOT in the anti-VIRUS part of NIS email protection. Slow email retrieval is not a problem when the anti-SPAM protection is turned OFF, and anti-VIRUS scanning remains ON.

It would appear that something has changed dramatically in the anti-spam scanning functionality from v19.x to 20.x.

Not good...

Good catch Hafox!

Confirmed -

The same  greatly improved performance occurs with Outlook2013/32Bit Preview after disabling the Anti-Spam scan.  Interestingly this issue seems to be within the scan engine itself - not related to the Anti-Spam Outlook COM Add-In.  Or so I assume because that aspect has not (yet) been implemented for the Office2013 version products.

Thanks for the followup, avjohnnie. Nice to know I'm not the only poor schmuck to be experiencing the issue. :smileyindifferent:

Just installed NIS version 20.1.1.2 and now Windows Mail runs very slowly as previously described.

Symantec need to get this sorted FAST as it is a major negative for me.

Same thing here.  Incoming email in Outlook Express 6 has slowed down a lot after updating to 20.1.1.2.   A fix would be greatly appreciated.

After trying and blaming every thing and everyone else I discovered this thread and realised my recent upgrade to IS 2013 was the cause of photo download problems in MS Outlook.

Stopped Norton Antispam and all fast again.

Norton should tell all customers to stop Norton Antispam in IS2013, kill it or FIX IT

Same Problem here with Outlook 2010 and latest NIS.

Very slow email download with download errors.

Right Click on NIS-Icon and deactivate Antivirus-Auto-Protect and the problem is gone.

However: This is not a solution

Erovo,

As mentioned in previous posts, you may be able to leave the Norton Antivirus portion of email protection enabled. For most folks, disabling the AntiSpam side of the product alone seems to speed things back up. As you said, however, this is certainly not a solution to this ever-expanding problem.

Good luck.
