Live Update before Smart Scan

I suggest that SmartScan automatically run a LiveUpdate before scanning. I'm surprised that it doesn't. Virtually every time that I have run a LiveUpdate manually before a SmartScan there have been required Protection Updates and occasionally Product Updates. A SmartScan without the most up to date Protection Updates seems like a fail to me. Is there any good reason *not* to automatically run LiveUpdate before a SmartScan?

We're hoping Norton 360 v24.x brings changes.
Thanks

Thanks for all the insights. Long story short it seems that all the alerts that Norton pops up urging me to run a SmartScan are just yet another of their really annoying ongoing marketing ploys and should just be ignored like all the rest.  Sigh.

Can I turn off promotional offers when running a Smart Scan? ›

Pulse Updates [here] was when Norton did it's work (heavy lifting) on your machine.

Nowadays. Norton does it's work in the cloud.  Norton queries the cloud.
As long as you have internet access.  Your Norton protection is always up-to-date.

Norton downloads a sub-set of prevalent malware definitions.
LiveUpdate brings protection and product updates.

LiveUpdate keeps your Norton protection up to date and helps safeguard your device from evolving cybersecurity threats.

By default, your Norton product downloads and installs the latest definition and program updates regularly from Norton servers to help protect your computer from new threats. If you have been offline or turned off Automatic LiveUpdate, you can run LiveUpdate at any time.

Some program updates may require that you restart your computer after you install them.

Behavioral Protection identifies emerging threats based on the behavior of files. It detects malicious code before virus definitions are available through LiveUpdate and protects you from advanced threats.

Behavioral Protection categorizes threats as high-certainty or low-certainty based on their behaviors. By default, Behavioral Protection blocks high-certainty threats. You can change the settings to have Behavioral Protection block all threats or ask you to block or allow low-certainty threats when it detects them. If you allow a threat, Behavioral Protection does not notify you if it detects the same threat again.

You must be connected to the Internet to get real-time Behavioral Protection.

Note: Norton 360 v24.x has changes.

Protection Updates are always up-to-date in the cloud..
Norton 360 queries the cloud.

Pulling defs does not mean they're needed defs.  Just means that's what's available from the cloud.

Overwriting resident defs may feel good...but, why do it.
I'm guilty of running LiveUpdate at the beginning and end of each session.
Just habit from good ol' days before cloud.

Protection Updates pulled down to the client are a sub-set of prevalent defs if/when you're offline.

Automatic LiveUpdate calls Quick Scan.

If you've run Smart Scan and your Network is password protected and has strong encryption.
Then running Smart Scan again...why?  Smart Scan is QuickScan + network check + Norton marketing Norton.

btw ~ static scans are least protection...running Norton scans using the same data as Norton real-time protection...why?
