Live Update failed to complete

This all started yesterday when I tried to open my vault (NIS version 22.5.5.15 running on Windows 8.1 laptop) and it failed to open after I had entered my vault password.

So I removed and reinstalled NIS using the Norton Removal and Reinstall tool.

This seemed to reinstall NIS ok, but not the latest version, so I ran liveupdate and it downloaded about 22 of the available updates then said "failed to complete". It installed most of those updates and once again said "failed to complete", but it got to the point of saying a patch was available, so I applied the patch.

I then ran liveupdate again and it downloaded some more updates but, once again failed to complete, but once again actually applied another patch.

I finally ran liveupdate a third time and it said that there were 2 updates available but it didn't download them. Yes, you've guessed, "failed to complete". Every time I ran liveupdate after that I just got the "failed to complete" message.

In desperation, I uninstalled NIS this time using the Norton Removal Tool (instead of the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool), then reinstalled it by downloading it from my Norton account. I had to physically remove the licence before I could do this as I had already used the 3 allowable licences and the Norton Removal Tool didn't remove the licence for me as part of the uninstall (why can't you make things work properly, Norton?). And yes, before anyone asks, I used the Norton Removal Tool 3 times before reinstalling NIS.

Anyway, the same procedure as for my first attempt - running liveupdate a few times, applying the patches and then still finding that I get the "failed to complete" message.

So now I have NIS reinstalled (which, by the way, fixed the vault login problem) but now I keep getting "failed to complete" every time I run liveupdate.

Does anyone have a clue as to what might be going on here, or has Norton fouled it all up yet again?

By the way, I also have the same version of NIS running on a Windows 7 machine with no problem whatsoever.
