Has anyone else experienced the LU1870 error message when manually running Live Update? Its appeared several times this past week whenever I run Live Update. I have not had any problems with manually running Live Update up until now.
The error message indicates "This product update failed to complete special processing needed for it to update properly". And there is always a red cross ticked against the "Virus Definitions" product which appears in the product list, whilst all the other products have green ticks against each.
I should mention that the update it struggles with is "Norton Anti-Virus Virus Definitions". Or at least this is the only product which Live Update prepares for installation.
I have Windows XP, no other Internet Security products installed except NIS, and the version is 2005 but has been up-to-date for the last 3-4 months.
Any suggestions whether this is just a temp issue which will correct itself in a few days, or a problem requiring something else?
The problem is that you are running a very old version of NIS 2005. It is so old, that it doesn't qualify for the free update to the current version which is NIS 2011. Is your XP up to date with sp 3 installed and all the updates? What needs to be done is for you to purchase a newer version of NIS and then we can help you to uninstall your NIS 2005 and get the NIS 2011 version. You can buy an older version from 2006 on and then get a free upgrade to NIS 2011. You need to have your Windows up to date though also if it isn't already up to date.
Please come back and let us know how you want to proceed. Thanks.
To answer your question(s), my computer is an eMachine (2002) and apparently only has SP1 (Windows 6.0). Because of this, I ran into problems trying to download IE7 a couple of months ago. Had to download Firefox as an alternative instead.
If I purchase NIS 2011 or a slightly earlier version, will I have issues installing it because of only having SP1 ?? I just checked and my computer is 32-bit only.
Please try and get SP 2 and SP 3 first and all the windows updates that go with those.
Please come back and let us know how you made out. Once this is done, we can then help you to remove the old software after you have purchased the newer version. Thanks.
Thanks Floplot and others for the suggestions and info. I installed Service Packs 2 & 3, then uninstalled NIS 2005. Have now installed NIS 2011 sucessfully. Everything working well, except for frequent "not responding" type lapses when running either IE8 or Firefox now. Never had the problem before.
Could these lapses be due to the way Live Update is set up on NIS 2011? If so, how do I change it so that LU runs manually rather than automatically? Is LU running frequently causing my browser to be very sluggish?
How did you remove NIS 2005? Did you use the control panel method and remove all parts listed in add/remove and then reboot the computer.? Did you use the Norton Removal Tool twice with a reboot between runs of it? After doing that, then you are ready to install NIS 2011. If you didn't remove NIS 2005 the proper way, it is possible that you may still have remnants of the old program which might have interfered with the proper installation.
I assume you got all the windows updates that were available for sp 2 and sp 3? Thanks.
Before installing NIS 2011, I used only the Norton Removal Tool to uninstall NIS 2005 and then rebooted my computer. However I did not go thru the process twice as I didn't know that was advised. Will that have made a huge difference to my sluggish browser issues?
And yes, I've been downloading all of the SP 2 & 3 updates as and when available.
I'd really like to avoid uninstalling NIS 2011 and doing the Norton Removal Tool all over again, if possible.
Any other suggestions? Would it help the browser problem if I changed the Live Updates to manual, rather than automatic? If so, how is that done?

I posted a thread about Internet Explorer hanging, but it seems as though nobody is noticing the thread, or the behavior. I think this person's issue with their browsers hanging is the same as mine, which is the same as what happened a couple of months ago. The Intrusion Prevention update a couple of months ago caused issues with IE. It was fixed within approximately a day.
It is my opinion that this problem has come back, except this time it's a little more specific. I notice that I tend to have problems when I've been to sites that utilize Flash. It's also not every time that I'll have issues, so it's now more sporadic. One thing in common is that there was an IPS update a couple of months ago, and one again this past week that happened just before this issue began (again). I picked up the update earlier today regarding the false-positives / deprecated IPS signatures, but the problem remains.
As I said in my thread, I'm running SystemWorks Premier 2009 with AV 16.8.0.41. Also Windows XP SP3, all updates current, etc, etc, etc... Disabling the IPSBHO add-on causes the lockup/hang behavior to go away.
