Live Update Question

Why is it that when I open the Live Update window, and it indicates it did an update within a minute or two, and I select to do a Live Update, it often finds 2 or 3 updates to do? Also, the last update it does always takes a long time to complete (like last night it took approximately 1/2 hour.

ok, thanks again

recently each time i run live update ( i.e. several times a day) there are updates - i don't remember there being so many updates in this short amount of time - are there a lot of updates coming out or is it because i just installed the latest version and my system is playing catch-up ?

also, is there a way to set things up so that the updates are running in the background automatically when i'm on the net ? my Norton product is NIS/NA - thanks

after running live update run it again until you see No updates found.  You have the latest protection updates.   You should be recieving updates automaticly anyway, but when I turn on my computer I run live update anyway.

Hi psek

In addition to what django has written you can check in history to see the time and date of the update and if the update completed, to check the frequency of the updates you can go to history, on the left hand drop down box click on full history then enter, Liveupdate session, in the search box on the right hand side of the window and click go, copy and paste what’s between the commas because if there’s a gap between live and update it won’t work (well it doesn’t on my version of NIS 2012). If you double click on anywhere on the update in the list it will open a window that has more details, there is a small box with a plus sign in it on the right hand side of, Total updates applied, click on this and a drop down list will show that can be scrolled in.

It is recommended that live and pulse updates are set to automatic but the is no warning if the automatic update does not initialise so if you don’t do what django does it is worth checking that you are getting updates and they are installing successfully.

The reason you see a single or a couple of updates each time you restart is the LiveUpdate is getting the Pulse updates that are sent out many times a day.

This is normal.

Thank you for your replies and sorry for the late response.

To be clear I do not have to restart after each update to get more updates correct? I gather from from your posts that if I ran Live Update until no new updates were found, I should have the latest protection and I can let automatic updates handle this from now on?

Thanks again.

Hi psek

After installing new updates Norton will request a restart of the computer if it is necessary.  Some up dates require a restart of the computer and some don’t.  Having live updates set to automatic is what Norton recommends.

Thanks again for your help intersec. I don't think I encountered any updates that required a restart but I did restart a few times just in case and checked until there were no new updates. I have also checked that both Automatic Updates and Pulse Updates are on. Thanks for all your help.

psek, generally Norton 2013 aka V20, doesn't require restarts for most things. I always do Live Update manually as soon as I sign on for maximum protection, and then leave Norton to do it's own thing while I'm online....

Have you turned off Windows Fast Startup feature? If not, your turning off the computer at night does not do a complete system shutdown to allow for programs like Norton to fully update themselves. If you use Windows  10, there can be an issue with the Fast Start feature.. See more information here.

Note that if you did have Fast Startup turned off and you received the Windows Creator's Update, it would have been turned bac on.
