My friend's Vista computer had a trial version of Norton installed when purchased. She di not want Norton so I uninstalled it for her. However, today I am going through the startup via msconfig and find some Symantec things there like Live update Notice Security. We do not remeber what version was installed, but wold like to rmove these snippets of the original trial version. How do I do this?
Older versions of Norton had both LiveUpdate and LiveUpdate Notice installed as separate programs. You should be able to find and remove them in Add/Remove Programs.
Also don't forget to run the Norton removal tool after the uninstallation to make sure al remains of Norton is gone. http://www.norton.com/nrt. Note: Norton removal tool would remove all Norton/Symantec product on your PC.
I did find the programs in the program list & have uninstalled them. To make sure everything is gone I would like to run the removal tool. However, the download asks what version that I wish to remove. this I do not know! Any ideas?
Did the Norton product have a fire wall in it? if it did, then it is most likely Norton Internet Security. If it had no fire wall, then it most likely would be Norton Antivirus.

Is it a brand name computer eg HP, Toshiba, etc? If so, try looking up the model number of your friend's computer on the manufacturer's website. The model specifications listed on the website should tell you what trial version of the Norton software came with the computer. Any details that you can supply about the computer in question would be helpful.
Failing that, have you had a look in the 'C:\Program Files' or the 'C:\ProgramData' directories for any potential leftover directories that may refer to Norton software? If there are any residual directories, then look for a directory that has a short text abbreviation followed by a group of numbers eg NIS_18.1.0.37. If you can find something like this, then we can advise you on the appropriate Norton Removal Tool to use.
Thx to all who responded - good info. However, there is more to the story:
Apparently the trial version was removed, another version was then installed and removed. Year & version unknown but might be Norton Internet Security.
I did find some leftover folders and files related to Norton and have copied them below. I found nothing to indicate year or version. I assume that I can delete these folders/files without a problem. Please verify before I delete.
Why not run both versions of the removal tool? Start with the one for early versions. If that removes everything, running the second one will not do any harm (it will simply not find anything to remove). If the first one did not remove everyything (because you did have a later version), the second one should remove what is left.
