Liveupdata not Working

Hello,

I have norton internet security 2011, and I am having trouble using liveupdate. Everytime I try I keep getting an error "Unable to connect to norton liveupdate servers, please check your internet connection". I know my internet is working perfectly well, I have checked the windows 'hosts' file, but still no luck.

I tried reinstalling norton and it worked, installed the first set of updates and restarted as usual, but then norton wouldn't update futher. Again unable to connect to the servers; I have tried across a period of days. Also when I try to access the help system through norton it is again unable to connect to the symantec servers.

I have Windows 7 x64bit, I know it is not very well supported but I need to try all my options before throwing away my subscription.

Please help, thankyou

Sorry still not working,

I can access the symantec homepage, but live update does not work

Hello winkerbie,

Tell us a little more about your network connection:

- What type of internet connection do you have (DSL, Cable, Fiber, Dial-up, etc)?

- Are you behind a proxy or hardware firewall?

- Speaking of firewalls, do you have any other firewalls enabled or any other programs that monitor internet usage?

- Are you connected behind a router?

- Are you using wireless?

Hi Winkerbie,

Are you having any other unusual symptoms with your computer? Are you able to browse to security websites like security.symantec.com?

Best wishes.

Allen

Hello,

I am getting quite frustrated with norton now. I had to uninstall norton 2011 because it kep causing my windows 7 x64bit to crash. Now norton 2011 will not update and is seemingly preventing my computer from install other 32bit software?

To answer your questions:

- I have Sky Broadband ADSL

- I am not behind a proxy

- I have no other firewall

- I have a netgear DG834GT router

- I am not wireless

- yes I can access symantec.com

I'm on Sky broadband as well. But I have the Sagem @Fast router. As long as I know the Netgear and Sagem routers have a firewall. Also, aren't they wireless routers?

I have no problem with NIS11.  Did you try running Malwarebytes' to see if there is any malware onboard? Plus, do you have the NIS11/10 CD.  If so, insert the cd before your computer boot up and boot from it.  Run the Norton Bootable recovery tool to see if there is any malware onboard.

An additional question, what malware/antivirus/security suites did you have prior to NIS11?

Hello Tywin

A wireless router can be hardwired also. It does not have to function as only a wireless router. My wireless router is hardwired.

I think the main problem I have is that I use Windows 7 64bit, ever since I upgraded to this version of windows I have had consistent issues with norton. Previously I used COMODO which is native 64bit. I used COMODO between norton 2010 and 2011, because norton 2010 did not work properly.

I found this instruction to remove comodo product on its forum.  Its for Comodo V3 but I cannot find the latest version.  Try it it might solve the problem.  http://forums.comodo.com/help_for_v3/full_removal_of_comodo_firewall_pro_3_with_safesurf_toolbar_if_regular_uninstall_method_fails-t17220.0.html

Hello winkerbie

If Comodo isn't completely cleaned out of your computer, it can interfere with the functioning of NIS 2011. After using the removal tools that Tywin suggests or a newer one if there is one for the version that you had installed before, I would suggest that you uninstall NIS 2011 again and install that as a clean install and see if you are still having problems.

You can download the Norton Removal tool from

http://www.norton.com/nrt

Please pick the proper Norton product that you want to remove. Also please be aware that it will remove all Norton products, so back up Identity Safe using the program to back that up. Also please have your product key handy.

Thank you Allen for new link

Please run live update until no more updates and then reboot.

Please come back and let us know if this helps. Thanks.

I cannot find a later up to date removal for the comodo software. Most suggest just using the add/remove tools would be enough. However, according to the instruction some files may remain. Also, I tend to use Revo uinstaller pro. For some strange reason, a portable version is no longer offered.

  1. Download the Norton Removal Tool as well as the Norton Internet Security Installation file to the desktop so that it can be easily found later

  2. Physically disconnect your self from the internet. That could include yanking out the ethernet cable/telephone cable from the back of your computer/turning off your wireless with either the wireless switch on your computer or turning off your router.  This is to prevent any cyber attacks while you are vulnerable.  DO NOT RECONNECT UNTIL MENTIONED!
  3. Back up any identity safe data:

    backup.png

  4. Uninstall the Norton software through the add/remove programs and let your computer reboot.

  5. Upon reboot, run the Norton Removal tool installed earlier.  Upon completion, let your computer to reboot or reboot manually (not quite sure why on Windows 7 the NRT doesn’t prompt a reboot).

  6. Repeat step 4 two more times just to be sure.

  7. Run the Norton Internet Security 2011 installation file downloaded in step 1.  If you are using Windows Vista and above, right click the installation file and select run as adminstrator (as shown in the screenshot below).

  8. Upon the completion of the installation, reconnect your internet.  Then run liveupdate repeatedly until all upgrades are complete.  You may delete the files you downloaded in step 1.

Optional steps. For maximum security, I recommend you to make sure the following settings are set to the below specifications:

  1. Open your Norton GUI and click on settings.

  2. Computer settings: In the computer settings, set intelligent file skipping to “off”. Turn on Microsoft automatic scan. Also set the boot time protection to “aggressive”. Doing so will make sure that your Norton software will load before any potential malware.

thank you everyone for your help, I cant seem to open the norton removal tool,

It starts extracting but then nothing, I can still see its process on task manager but it is at "00" CPU usage.

I have windows 7 64bit

Did you open it as admin?

Thankyou so much everyone for your support, It works now updating and everything. I think when norton first failed I reinstalled COMODO, and whilst I had disabled it when trying to reinstall norton multiple times, i never really removed it. Now with COMODO removed norton works superb.
