Hello, i recently have been having a Problem with my LiveUpdate, you see, I am a Beginner at computers, so i dont know what to do when it comes to these things, On Sunday, i woke up to Norton Antivirus saying that my Virus and Spyware definitions ar not up to date you may be at risk for infection." and to fix it. i clicked Fix now. And i expected it to Update and we would be fine. But instead it told me That "LiveUpdate Completed with an Unknown error. I didnt know what it was. so i thought it was just a glitch or something. I ran it again. No luck. It says the Same thing everytime i run it. I run Quick scan to find anything that may be in my system. No threats. Full system scan, No threats. I dont know what this is. Am i still protected? or am i being fooled? so I ask from you here at Norton, Can you help me? thank you.
Ok, thanks peter, How do i check my system date and time are correct? Please let me know. thank you. Plus my Stepdad Used LiveUpdate and it Worked fine for him. so does that mean the LiveUpdate thing is fixed? or is it just the server or me? thanks.

To check your date and time, click on the date and time that are showing at the bottom right of your computer screen. A calendar and clock should come up. If the date or time is incorrect, make any necessary changes.
LiveUpdates can be affected by temporary server issues, either from Norton or any one of the internet servers between your computer and Norton. They usually clear up in a short period of time.
If you are still seeing constant update problems after a full day, come back here and we can check to see if your product has an issue.

The date and time are Right, But LiveUpdate still had the Unknown error thing all day yesterday and today. My Stepdads computer got the New update with no problems but with me it still doesnt work. this started yesterday and im still wondering whats wrong with it. I use a Windows XP and he uses a Windows 7.
Hi John_069
Restarting the computer can be the solution for many problems so it’s worth trying this in future with update issues and other issues.
Restart the computer and check for Norton updates manually or right click the Norton icon in the task bar and click, run live updates, and then recheck until there are no more updates restarting the computer as requested.

Yesterday i restarted the Computer after i ran a scan, No luck. it still had the little Exclamation point when it started up. a little bit ago it told me that my tVirus and Spyware definitions were not up to date. and Live Update still had an Unknown error when i ran it. Still i t=ried live update today and no luck. Am i still protected even with this Issue? Cause someone said that Nortons servers are screwing up?
Hi John_0696_
The Norton product is protecting the computer its reporting that it is not up to date not being up to date doesn’t mean you have lost any protection. I have automatic updates and pulse updates set to off and every 3 to 6 days or sometimes more the Norton product will go orange and then I get updates and sometimes it fails then I wait one day or so and try again. To be safe when this happens just visits reputable sites and don’t click on links or ads.
Try running autofix by clicking the Norton icon, click support, click get support (or right click the Norton icon in the task bar and click Get support) let it run then restart the computer. It should tell you if any items where fixed. If you get an error message about MBAM then just click on skip on the error screen.

Hi,
Norton is aware of a problem with the live update feature
They are working to get it fixed as soon as possible
Until then just stay calm and
Stay well and surf safe
Let me know when it is fixed, so i can fix my norton. Im afraid that my computer is gonna break. I hope the problem is fixed soon. I cant afford to lose my computer. Also, what is causing the “unknown error” in liveupdate?

As the error message says, it is 'unknown'. Without an error code, there is no way to pinpoint the source of the problem.
You will know when it is fixed when you no longer receive these errors. Nothing is going to break as there are other real time layers of protection in your Norton product.
Hey its me again i have some more questions,my norton task bar icon is still orange. does norton detect Malware or no? Cause i am worried that i may have some. Im not sure if i do. Plus, last time live update worked was the 26th. Was that when the Norton servers screwed up live update?
I turned on my computer and my norton went from orange, to RED. This is starting to worry me real bad. I cant update! It still tells me that i have an unknown error in LiveUpdate! It last updated 7 days ago. I need help. I want my norton to go back to green
Hi John_0696,
It might be worth your while to go ahead and run the Intelligent updater in order to catch up on your definitions. se the following link:

Thank you so much :) I ran autofix and Uninstalled and reinstalled Norton. Its worknig like it supposed too and Updated to the Current version. If i ever have any problems, i will come back to you.
Hello
I would not keep the pulse and autoupdate turned off and just check every few days as the solved post recommends. The pulse updates occur every couple of minutes and keep the product up to daye, Checking back every few days is just not often enough. Autoupdate also needs to be kept on, even though there are some times when errors do occur.Keeping your product up ro date occurs most of the time thru the autoupdate feature.

I can't understand allowing your security to lapse for days. If it wasn't important to keep NIS up to the minute Pulse Updates would not exist and new Virus Definitions + other updates would not be released regularly throughout each day.

What you both said!
Hi floplot
May I point out that I did not recommend that automatic and pulse updates be turned off, I just said its what I do.
Hi Krusty13
What don’t you understand about personal preference?

If you read all of John_0696_ posts, John_0696_ was rather concerned about the updates, so I was just pointing out that I have automatic and pulse updates turned off. I said this to try and ease the situation. I normally say that Norton recommends that automatic and pulse updates are turned on but saying that under the circumstances may have added to the concern.

Hello intesec
Since the O/P marked your thread as the solution, he most likely liked your solution to the problem. Of course if you turn off the updates, you won't see the errors. The fact that you were trying to help a user and mentioned what you do, that infers that it is the correct thing to do which it is not the correct thing to do..If yyou want to try and help the users, you have to give proper answers or solutions. Granted, he was at the panicky stage. When you want to help a user, you have to put yourself in their shoes and think if you would be pleased if another user would give you that answer. Just some friendly advice on how to help someone.
