Liveupdate says it's finished, but program version doesn't change

I'm using Win XP and NIS20.  I'm a longtime user of NIS, and have installed the full install files and updated them many times over the years.   Last night I did an install using the full installation file for NIS 20.3.0.6 which I had downloaded in April from the well-known link here at norton.com.   When I ran Liveupdate, it did a mega-update--some 240 MB (40 updates), and I had to reboot twice during the update.  It finally told me that everything was up-to-date and Liveupdate found nothing else.   But when I check at SUPPORT|ABOUT it still says 20.3.0.6.   It didn't update all the way to the latest version of 20.3.1.22 even after multiple reboots.   So that also messed up my Norton Toolbar in Firefox 21.  It installed Toolbar 2013.3.4.3 which is incompatible.  It did update the Vulnerability Protection to 11.3.0.9-5.

So I thought I'd uninstall NIS and Firefox, and re-try.   I re-installed NIS 20.3.0.6, and it did the same thing.--it did a lot of various updates , but wouldn't update the program version.   So I decided to use another installation file I had, which was for an earlier version 20.1.1.2.    After I installed that one and did a big Liveupdate (rebooting a couple of times), it didn't update past 20.1.1.2 when I check at SUPPORT|ABOUT.   So neither of the two versions updated past their original program file version, even though they updated various other components.

I just downloaded the following file from norton.com from the "free trial" page.

NIS-TW-30-20-3-0-36-EN-US

So I'll install it and see if I can get it to update to 20.3.1.22., but my confidence level is decreased.

But was curious if anyone has any thoughts on why I may not be able to update all the way with the first 2 files I tried?  Since it happened with both of them, it made me wonder if anything was known to be wrong with Liveupdate last night that would account for it.   I didn't get any update errors, just green checkmarks.   Thanks for any info.

Hi Huylym,

Not sure about your LIveUpdate problem questions.

I would suggest prior to going thu all that again, that you give the Norton Removal and Reinstall Tool a try.   This tool will emove your current Norton roduct and reinstall the latest version  automatically.  You will have to run LiveUpdate (rebooting when requestd) until LiveUpdate responds with "no updates found" in order to catch up on defiinitions, but you will be on the most current version.  20.3.1.22 (as of this moment).

To play it safe, please Export your iD safe Data prior to running the tool.  You shldnot loose the data - but Export as a precaution.

Let us know how that goes.

I think there may be the possibility that when a new Norton is getting phased in (20.4x), the servers may not be pushing out the the previous update (20.3.1).  I'm no where near 100% on this as fact though ... just taking a stab.  But, there is a chance that your Norton may not update to the most recent 20.4 version until that's rolled out to everyone, and 20.3.1 may be skipped.

Has anyone been able to update to 20.3.1 since the announcement of 20.4?  If so, that throws my theory out.

Hi Brocktoon,

It's like you said at the end of your message, your theory is wrong since I have upgraded +/- 10 hour ago from a previous version of NIS and have received updates that have led me to NIS v.. 20.3.1.22

Hi,

The upgrades to 20.3.x should be available to all. The 20.4 upgrade is being released slowly so that any of the minor bugs that might still be hidden in some of the darker corners can be removed before the program is on everybody's system. It's coming. Stay tuned

What version do you get if you download from http://norton.com/latestnis?

Edit:  I see Yank has already provided this link in a thread you participated in.

Hi:

By using that link I get the latest version that is generally available.  The install file itself is the NO DEFS version 20.3.1.22.     I was hoping I'd be able to get to that version using Liveupdate, however..

I know I can use that install file, but right now I'm trying to figure out why the Liveupdate method is not working for me.   I tried on two other two installation files in addition to the 2 versions I mentioned above.  ( I use Norton Removal Tool between each attempt.)    I have just finished trying to update the 20..2..X.x version by working with a disk image from earlier this year..   It also acts like Liveupdate is working and downloads a huge "update" a couple of times, but after a couple of reboots when it says it is finished and no more updates are available, the product is still at 20.2.x.x. when checked at ABOUT in the GUI.  And even though I rebooted twice it still has the wrong Norton Toolbar; it has the one that goes with 20.2.x.x, which makes sense since the product didn't fully update..    So I uninstalled that, and I tried a full install file that I downloaded today from the retail website's product page, which is a version 20.3.0.36 trial version..   Likewise, after activating,  it went through a large Liveupdate and a couple of reboots, but always showed 20.3.0.36 in the ABOUT query in the GUI, and installs Norton Toolbar 2013.3.43, which again is the one that corresponds to that version and is incorrect.

So in summary, I have tried on the following installation files without being able to update beyond the original version even though it acted like it was going to succeed.  *Some* things are updated, but the program version and Norton Toolbar do not show any upgrade in version number.   Again, I'm using Win XP, (fully updated,) so I dodn't know if that has anything to do with it.

20.1.1.2

20.2.x.x.

and 2 different instances of 20.3.0.36 (one downloaded from norton.com a few weeks ago, and another from the retail product page today.)

I know I can use the NO DEFS 20.3.1.22 link you mention, and will as a last resort.   But I wanted to see if anyone else was having an issue where the version and Toolbar didn't change even though it appeared to progress normally.   Ultimately, I'd like to have the confidence that my product was going to update itself in the usual fashion, without me having to uninstall, use NRT, and reinstall with each product update.  Until I figure out why this is happening, my confidence level is a bit shaky, since it makes me wonder "what else" might not be updating correctly that could put me at risk.

Thanks to all!

Addendum:

After the LIveupdate, and when I browse through the file directories, it looks like the defs and many components have updated, but there is a conspicuous absence to updates of any folders that contain "engine" .  Engine still says 20.3.0.36, and there are some other folders and files that still say "20.3.0.36".   Nothing, however, says 20.3.1.22 anywhere.when I do a file search.  It's like everything is updating except for the engine, but Liveupdate still says it is "successful.".  But since the engine files are unchanged, it continues to show the original version in ABOUT.    I assume the "engine" must be closely allied with the Norton Toolbar in some respect, which prevents the Toolbar from updating as well, which remains at 2013.3.4.3,   It is indeed a perplexing curiosity..

Obviously after trying multiple files and versions, it's clear I will not be able to solve the dilemma.  I'll ultimately have to uninstall, cleanup with NRT, and then install the 20.3.1.22 NO DEFS version from the "latestNIS" link so that the proper engine can be installed.   I'll be suspicious, but I guess I will know Liveupdate is working again if I receve the 20.4.x.x. engine in the next 2-3 weeks.

Thanks to all for your suggestions, and have a good weekend!

Just updating the engine directory does not update Norton to the newer version. eventually the MUI directories have to update and probably some other files as well.  I've had a a partial update to 20.4.0.40 come through , but so far only my engine directories have been installed.  As far as Norton is concerned, I'm still running 20.3.1.22 as it's still using that engine directory instead of the 20.4 files.  Basically I think you need a few diffrent peices to work together to make the final update complete

My problem is kind of the reverse of yours.   I'm not even getting any of the 20.3.1.22 directories or engine. There's no mention of 20.3.1.22 at all in my file system.  But I do get the latest defs, etc.   It sounds like your new 20.4.x.x. engine directories are being placed, but you haven't been switched over to the new engine yet.
