LiveUpdate too large and too slow to download

I live in an area with very slow internet service. The NAV LiveUpdates are so large that I can only rarely download them completely. They literally take four to six hours to complete. On many occasions I have started the LiveUpdate process and then had to stop or lost my connection. When re-starting the LiveUpdate I then found it was starting over from scratch so my earlier time was all wasted.

I have tried using a download manager to try to get just the virus definition files at Symantec, but those files are even larger - 178 mb or so recently - and also usually take four or more hours to achieve.

I asked about this last year and have seen no change in procedures. Is it possible for the updates to be reduced in size? Or can the LiveUpdate manager save the status of a download so that it can be completed in multiple sessions over the course of more than one or two days? Or can the downloads be parcelled into smaller units so that they can be downloaded piecemeal? Perhaps the NAV LiveUpdate manager could use multiple data streams to speed up the download process like the "Down Them All" and other download manager programs?

I do like NAV, but this problem is wearing thin. If I cannot download current virus definitions or updateded software, the NAV program does not do me much good. I would appreciate any assistance.

Thank you.

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I already had Smart Definitions enabled. By the way, I am updating on three computers, one of which is 64 bit with the others running 32... More time needed therefore for updates.

Also if you can check if the pulse update and automatic liveupdate features are on or not, because they are meant to download updates constantly in small packets. So you just need to be connected online and it will constantly keep on updating. Also as far as I know the Norton Liveupdate starts from where it was stopped earlier. It collects those files till the whole update is completed and then installs it.

Pulse Updates and Automatic Update are also both on. I cannot be online continuously as I live on a boat and am frequently out of touch of land line telephone and internet systems. I get ashore for a week or so at a time and then take care of internet related business, so updates can pile up, I guess.

Also, I have had numerous times when I have been online collecting the updates and then either ran out of time or lost my connection. When returning to the updates, it did not seem to resume with fewer megabytes of updates remaining, but started over...very frustrating.

Not sure if this is possible for you, but when you come ashore, can you find an internet cafe and then download all your updates? Maybe that will get the downloads faster.

Thank you.

That's exactly what I am doing now. All internet service here (island of Palau in the western Pacific) is notoriously slow. I spend hours and hours (and a fair bit of cash) gathering Norton and Microsoft updates at a rate of something like 10kb/sec at best and usually much worse. But it's air conditioned and the food is okay.

Sounds like an interesting lifestyle.

Unfortunately, there are not many options if you wish to be fully protected. Have you asked around to see if there are any faster connections around?

Good idea. I have checked and some businesses pay big $$ for somewhat faster service, but they do not seem to like to share.

I wanted to pester the folks at Symantec to see if they can try adjusting their products so that they are more amenable to people with slow connections. I am guessing that there are more with this problem than just us here in Palau. It looks to me like they just keep adding virus definitions to a master file and it just keeps growing and growing. Years ago it was only 20 mbytes or less. I wonder why they don't just have add-on files that would simply tack on new definitions to the list already available.

I also get irritated with a notice that pops up daily when I haven't been online for over a week or two. Norton has a pop up that tells me that my subscription is not current since I haven't been online. I would like to be able to disable that.

With the connected world we are in, there are tens of thousands of new malware files and variants released every day. That necessitates the larger definition updates than we used to have many years ago.

I do not think there is really anything Symantec can do to make the downloads any smaller.

I understand what you are saying. Thanks anyway for responding. At least I think I’m doing all I can to get those updates. Perhaps some day they will come up with a bettery way. If not and the list keeps growing, even those with fast connections may soon find they have problems? Cheeers!

If you run LiveUpdate manually to download the updates and you stop or lose your connection it will restart where it left off as long as you do not cross-over from PM to AM (midnight) or from AM to PM (noontime). You have to get the updates done in one of those 12 hour periods with manual update. If it does cross-over while updating and you lose your connection LiveUpdate will start over from the beginning. I experimented this past weekend and used Automatic LiveUpdate instead of running LiveUpdate manually and it did not lose the definitions it downloaded even though it crossed over both at midnight and at noon while downloading updates. Since you already have Automatic LiveUpdate on just let the program do the updates.
