The lusetup file downloaded from the Symantec site for Liveupdate states that it is version 3.4.1.234; however, when the installer is completed, the version still shows 3.4.1.232. This is the case on Vista SP1 and also on XP-SP3. And after rebooting. Is the LiveUpdate not installing or is there a bug in the version number itself?
I downloaded the install for the new LiveUpdate build 234 from
http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/home_homeoffice/products/lu/lu/files.html
and ran it.
When I run Luall.exe manually from C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate and click Options, About, it shows me that I have the 234 version.
I am running NIS 2008 on VISTA Ultimate 32-bit SP1.
Greetings,
I am curious to know the location from which you downloaded LiveUpdate. Is it the English language version?
Also, where are you viewing the version information?
Thanks,
-jgreen
I'm running NIS 2008 V15.5.0.23, English version. I downloaded lusetup from the link supplied above just now, ran the installer and it still shows 3.4.1.232. I get the version from running Luall.exe and clicking on Options>About LiveUpdate.
This is happening both on Vista SP1 Business and also on XP-SP3 (different computers).
Thanks. The file in that location is definitely build 234.
The LiveUpdate installation creates a log file which shows whether the install was successful in \Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\LuResult.txt.
If the log shows anything other than a successful install, please paste the text into your reply.
If the log doesn't show a problem during installation, let's rule out the possibility of a UI problem by checking the file version in the following ways:
In Windows Explorer, go to \Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate. Right-click the LUALL.EXE file and find the version number on the Version tab.
In the Control Panel, open Add or Remove Programs. Click the LiveUpdate entry, then click the "Click here for support information" hyperlink.
There is no LuResult.txt file in the folder C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate or anywhere on my C drive.
LUALL.exe in my LiveUpdate folder is V3.4.1.232
In Programs and Features (Vista), there is no Symantec or Norton LiveUpdate uninstaller entry.
Same on Add or Remove Programs (XP-SP3), there is no Symantec or Norton LiveUpdate uninstaller entry.
Thanks for checking that. It certainly is odd that no LuResult.txt file exists. This suggests that the installation did not run.
When you double-click the Lusetup.exe file, do you see a UI with a progress bar, etc. that indicates that an installation is occurring?
Have you tried deleting your copy of Lusetup.exe and downloading a fresh copy?
I just deleted LuSetup.exe, redownloaded LuSetup.exe and ran the installer again.
It shows that it is extracting files. Then it asks if I want to update LiveUpdate. I answer OK. Then it shows the 2 configuring windows, they disappear and that is the end of it.
It's interesting that the Symantec site for LuSetup.exe shows that 3.4.1.234 was released in February-08. I updated to V15.5.0.23 on 9-April-08 and the LiveUpdate version is 3.4.1.232. Hmmm. I wonder if LuSetup.exe detects that same LiveUpdate and therefore does not upgrade.
My Luall.exe V3.4.1.232 has
The file <C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\LUALL.EXE> has the following Checksum(s)
MD5 - 7694BF801ECC7D3B685CAF2D28BD0960
Try run the install as an Administrator

Same results, it does not update.
Try to uninstall LU from Add/Remove programs, and install the file you have downloaded.
(This is just a suggestion, do this on your own risk.)

There is no LU uninstaller in either Programs and Features for Vista SP1 or Add and Remove Programs for XP-SP3. I had just assumed that V15.5.0.23 changed such that LU would be removed at the time NIS 2008 is uninstalled.
edit: (corrected the version number)
Hi there,
We haven't forgotten you - we've been trying to reproduce the issue.
LiveUpdate should always have a separate entry in Add/Remove or Programs and Features. Build 232 is what shipped with the current version of Norton Internet Security 2008.
One thing I just noticed about your post is that you say you are using version 15.5.0.53. The latest version of Norton Internet Security 2008 is 15.5.0.23. Where did you see the version number 15.5.0.53, and how did you obtain the product?
Thanks!
I stand corrected. The NIS 2008 version number I have is 15.5.0.23. Copied down the .53 incorrectly on my notes…sorry.
Okay, whew!
Look for a file called LuInstall.LiveUpdate in the following locations:
XP: Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate\LuInstall.LiveUpdate
Vista: Program Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate
Set Windows to show hidden files and folders to see these folders.
I'll provide you an email address via private message where you can attach the files (assuming they exist).
The two files (one from Vista and one from XP) have been sent to the e-mail address you provided.
Thanks
Thanks a lot. We’ll be in touch tomorrow.
Excellent! This forum is such a breath of fresh air for Norton users
