Locks Up when doing Full System Scan

I have had no trouble with Norton, but yesterday when I went to run a full system scan, it started with the "Scanning commonly infected sites, and start-up files" but never started checking files and was locked up.  I finally had to restart the computer using the Task Manager.  There was an error that said "Symantec System Framework" not responding or something like that.  I ran a Quick Scan with no problems, but I cannot run the full.  I tried it again today with the same results.  What is going on and what do I do now??  Thanks in advance for any help!

Do you still get this error after running a manual live update?

Over to you!!!

I have Vista Home Premium. The Norton info is Version 16.7.2.10.  Yes, I run a Live Update, it installs any new info, and then I try to run the Full System and it does this.  I am so clueless! Thanks again!

ksuhog,

Please open your Norton UI and go to settings => computer scans => Rootkit and Stealth items scan. Please turn that OFF and try again. Does that change anything?

Could you also please download Hi Jack This from:

http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/

and attach the log here.

Furthermore,

please downlaod malwarebytes from here:

www.malwarebytes.org

update it, and run a full scan.

I just want to make sure that this isn't because of some sort of malware :-)

Matt

Attached is the Log.  I turned off what you said and will try to run the scan after the Malware scan runs.  The Malware scan is running now! I will post the results when that is done.

I don’t see anything funny in HiJackThis… but we’ll see what MBAM says  There’s one other scan that I may want you to do, just to check for the presence of a rootkit… other than that, I’m not entirely sure what could be wrong… we may have to reinstall your Norton - but no worries, we’ll see when we get there

I'm off for now - getting late here. will check again in the morning!

The MBAM showed no infections or problems.  I changed the Rootkits and Stealth Items Scan to Off and then the Full System Scan ran just fine, showing nothing.  I am not sure what the problem was!  My question is, do I leave that setting to off, or change it back to On?? Thanks so much for all the info and the steps to check!

ksuhog.  The setting should be to on, but you may be caught between update patches.  If Norton is stable with it off until you get the 16.7.2.11 update, so be it.

Do you have any other Norton programs other than NIS2009 installed?  Your HiJackThis log shows some unusually files for just NIS2009.  Also you may have other problems based on the log.

Please download SUPERAntiSpyware from this LINK . Choose the free version as this does not have a real time scanner that will interfere with Norton products. Install the program and update the definitions.

Boot into Safe Mode:
Start your system and tap the F8 key until the Advanced Options Menu appears. Using the arrow keys, select Safe Mode (no networking or command prompt) and press ENTER.

Once Safe Mode is loaded, run a full scan with SAS. Have the program fix / delete whatever it finds and make a log file. Please post the log file contents back here for review.

Please download SysProt here http://homepages.slingshot.co.nz/~crutches/SysProt  and run it.

Choose the Log tab and select all the items in the Write to log box. Then select Create Log to start scanning. When it is done, a message window will appear with the location of the log file.

Please attach the log file to a post here; the Add Attachments links is below the orange Post button. Thanks

This is important, I think you may have a rootkit. PLease diable Norton's auto=protect when you run this, and also you may have to right click on SysProt, go to properties and make sure unblock is ticked and click apply.

Matt

Turned setting back on, ran new Live Update and it ran Full Scan just fine, finding nothing.  Thanks for the help!
