My XP pc used to have drive C: NTFS (operating system) and drive D: NTFS for storage of files until PM7 managed to change drive D to PqRP. Ive searched all over the net and found what i need to do, however, its not working.
I dont have a floppy drive, have tried to boot up computer with a CD ROM Boot Disk but i cant seem to locate and run PTEDIT.EXE even from another disk, or access C: where i placed a copy. When i run either PTEDIT or PTEDIT32 from Windows Desktop, i get either Error #5 or Error #5005
I was trying to reallocate some free space. Drive C: was 30GB and D: 275GB. Drive C was getting a bit tight so i used PM7 to reallocate the space. The program froze mid flow so i ended up restarting the machine, and found that D: no longer shows up in My Computer. WHen viewin in PM7, its a yellow drive PqRP type.

Yep, trying to reverse the process and make it back to NTFS but i need help with PTEDIT.
I have a BOOT CD which i downloaded from the net but when i get into dos, it doesnt seem to work dos command properly. It wont let me access C:, doesnt List (DIR) files on the cd disc correctly as when i insert a cd which i have burnt PTEDIT onto, it doesnt show the file. Ive also tried various drive lettter without sucess.
Both drives appear to be the original sizes. Can you show me how i can get PTEDIT or PTEDIT32 to work on my pc with these extra files you mentioned, or if you have any other suggestions.
Ill have to try it tomorrow now, as i have to go, but i will look into making a USB boot disk when hopefully i can also copy PTEDIT32 onto, to see if i can get it to run if all else fails.
Since ptedit is freely availible from the symantec ftp server, I have no problem sending it to you.
I'll put together a bootable CD that will work for you. I'll send you a private message with how to get it, check the little envelope icon on the top of the page.
I'll post instructions in a while on how to use it, I'll be around tomarrow as well.
Brian - I have PM7 installed on my pc so ran it from the programs list.
Dave - Thanks, that much appreciated. Ill look out for my message and work on it tomorrow. Im off to bed cos im up early for work. BTW, which PTEDIT do i use? 32 or not?
Thank you very much for the offer Andy, thats nice of you to offer and I will let you know if I need anything in the future.
I already put it on a file hosting site and sent the user a link.
Thats just a basic boot CD I made with Windows 98 boot files, since you only hopefully need to use it once I didn't take much time with it.
Burn that ISO to a CD as a disk image, then boot your system with it.
Choose the option to boot with CD-Rom drivers because I was too lazy to make it all in the boot file.
When DOS loads you will get a warning about not being able to identify the file system. Thats normal because they are NTFS. One of the last lines will show what drive letter the CD-Rom drive was assigned make a note of that letter.
I'll use the letter D, chnage that letter if necessary.
Type the following pressing Enter after each line:
D:
mouse
ptedit
You should get a screen like this:
The boxes on the very left is the file type, the second one down where I circled should be your second partition.
Make sure you get the right one, hopefully you will see it listed as PqRP
Click once in that box to select it and then click the button "Set Type".
Change it to type 07 and click OK.
Close ptedit, remove the CD and restart your system buy holding down the CTRL and ALT bottons while pressing Delete.
Thanks so far. After booting up the PC with your disc, and entering MOUSE, i can here the drive spinning and eventually it goes quiet and stays lke this
I added mouse.com, although it works for all my mice I know it doesn't work for some.
Try skipping the mouse and after typing D: type ptedit and see if that loads. If it does, can you see if the second partition is set to something other than 07?
(look in that screenshot I posted).
If the "Type" box is set to something else, I can tell you how to change it using your keyboard.
Brian also has another tool he uses that may be easier then ketboard commands.
When your done looking at it with ptedit, you can reboot your system by using CTRL+Alt+Delete.
In the download section there is a free bootable CD, download that and burn it to a CD.
Boot the system with it, it's linux based so it has a much greater mouse support than DOS.
Right click on the D drive, or the partition in question.
Select: Modify > Change Partition Type ID
Double check to make sure you are selecting the right partition and then change it to type 0x07
Then near the bottom left click "apply".
Cross your fingers and boot back into windows and see if you can access the second partition.
If it worked, you can later use that same disk to make your partition changes after backup up your important data.
Always do all your partition changes outside of windows. Unlike PM that is not supported, Partition Wizzard does not have the large drive limitations that PM does.
I don't see any other options at this point then trying to change it back to NTFS. I think I would be more reluctant to find or fix any possible errors first without first trying to have a look?
One quick thing - when booting from the Ghost Recovery CD, if you click on 'utilities', then 'Partition Table Operations', this will launch PTEdit32.exe.
Before he does anything, he should get an image of the parition. If Ghost does not recognize it, change it to NTFS anyways so it does, then create and image, and if all else fails, he can restore it and change it back to what it was from NTFS.
Ok, so far ive managed to get partitionwizard to boot up the PC and to change D drive back to NTFS, however, i still cant access it from the desktop. Its showing up, but when i click on it, theres an error.
I think the next step is to change it to a LOGIC drive, but partitionwizard also states i have an error on D: drive and asks me to run the check file system, but this option is greyed out on the demo download i got off their site.
So whats next to try?
In addition to above, the Available space remaining on D: *maybe* slightly less, im sure i had just over 15GB space left, but i could be wrong. Its possible PM7 could have started something in there.
Andy, i dont have a Ghost Recovery CD, all i have is the PTEDIT file a boot up disc which didnt work and now the PartitionWizard Boot Disc DaveH showed me. This loads up their own program.
Can i get the Ghost Recovery CD from somewhere, or is that one of those discs youre supposed to have made incase of these events?
Nice work so far. You have recovered the partition but file system corruption is the present issue. Can you open a Windows Command Prompt (Start, Accessories) and run
